after following all the instructions on 'ripping' cds (i have been successful i think)...but i have reached the last stage where I have to cut the video (as it is too large ie 740mbs) into two seperate files. Now, excuse my ignorance, but does this mean i have no option but to burn my film onto two seperate cds? Is there anyway i can get my finished product onto one cd? Confused

You didn't tell which format you have the clip in. If you're talking about DivX clips, the only way to fit those into one CD, if they're way much bigger than 800MB, is to lower the bitrate when you're encoding them.

I followed the instructions exactly as they were at http://www.afterdawn.com/articles/archive/dvd2vcd_with_smart_dvd2avi_tmpgenc.cfm and tried adding subtitles using the vfapi... (but wasnt succesful this time adding the subtitles..but thats not important, I will try again!)...so what format would that have given me? VCD? I'm not sure..the actual file that I burned onto disc (the first half of the movie) is called AVSEQ01..a DAT file...and it is in a folder that has been created by the software called MPEGAV)

Many thanks..Pete

Yeah, VCD is only 74mins per CD, can't be changed. So most of the movies take 2 CDs.

i'm asking about the video quality. I'll use southpark for example. The original resolution was 720 X 480 (i think) and it looked great. I encoded it with tmpgenc to vcd format so the new resolution is 325 X ... or whatever it is. Now on the computer in full-screen mode, the video looks horrible. When i burn it on a vcd and play it on a dvd player, will it look any better? And with real movies (not like southpark which is animated) does the quality look that bad? I'm wondering if im doing something wrong, because if there's no other way to get better quality other than a ridiculous 35 minute svcd or a $500 dvd rom and burner, then i just don't see why its worth all this trouble to burn a vcd, rather than buy the dvd's. ??

Of course you will never get better....or even equal quality to that of a DVD unless you directly copy it to a DVD. Whenever you compress the file, you lose quality....I recommend you go with bigger files and save quality

I have ripped and encoded everything and it works fine. I have followed the VCD burning article to use with Nero, and the CD came out fine. Although, when I play it on my DVD player (which supports VCD), it plays but it incredibly choppy. I have played it on my DVD ROM with no problems. Is there something that I could change to fix this?? Any ideas what might be causing this?? CD-R media?? Burner?

OK, so I am probably a bit late and a bit of a beginner, but when I play VCDs on my TV with a standalone DVD player the results are quite passable, I think because the 'analogue' type CRT rather than the 'digital' PC monitor, or plasma screen are rather more forgiving, because of their display method (this is a bit like the fact that a 640x480 digital pic looks okay on monitor, but total shite [sorry] when printed same size on even a good printer]. the picture from the TV always seems a little 'smoother' than on the PC monitor, even if the TV is bigger. You must, however, if using this website's DVD-VCD using Start, TMPGEnc etc article, follow the instruction to the letter with TMPGEnc when you press the settings button and alter the Video tab. You must select motion precision 'Highest Quality - Very slow' (something like that) - maybe that's why the picture does not come out well on your standalone with the Choppy pictures. I asked the VCD length question yesterday (although I did not find your thread first-strange?) and longer discs (80 minute plus) will record longer than 74 minute movies in VCD, but even if your disc, burner and software will do up to 99 minutes, many standalones will not support longer than 90 minutes. This should mean that we can do single VCDs if you cut the crap off the beginning and credits at the end (they are only full of copyright BS anyway!

OK any techies who think I a talking rubbish, please be gentle, I have not been doing this long :-)
