have problem adding dvd-rw to laptop?????????

I have an older laptop (came with windows XP)
trying to add DVD-RW through an external kit
the drive is an older 4x, have not got a newer drive to even
seen by computer(tried a double layer)
I have only been able to get DVDsanta to reconise DVD-RW capibility
Nero,dvdshrink will not even reconise drive as a DVD-RW
Nero will cd-rw with drive
I have tried to reload driver with no change

have looked at the microsoft driver:
5.1.2535.0
7/1/2001
is this the correct driver from microsoft
Is there something else I could do??????????????????????????:)
