Few quick questions:
1. What brand of blank media are you using?
2. What brand and model burner are you using?
3. Is your burner's firmware up-to-date?
4. What speed are you burning at?
5. What program are you using to burn?
I'm sure I missed something, but try to answer as many of these questions as possible and we will do our best to help you out and get your back-ups working :)

You can check the version of your firmware using the Nero Info Tool.
Quote: 4.max
Try slowing your burn speed down, especially if you are using a cheap brand of media. You did not state what you are using or what burn speed it is rated at. Best is Verbatim and Made in Japan Sony, Maxell or Fuji.

Your drive is an OEM from your PC mfr, as far as I know this is the latest. But you can contact them on their site and see if there is anything newer. Have you tried burning at a lower speed than max, also just what media are you using, the brand name?

Yes, you can try -R and try and see if the makes any difference. Try Verbatim it much better media. Possibly your players will just not accept +R media.

1 thing I can tell you is most <xbox'es> don't read dvd+. Sony media (yuck), before you start backing up movies take arniebear's suggestion and buy verbatims!!
This is a must have program if you plan on using shrink!!
