Whats the best software to actually edit a mpeg file...not cut it or add on to it or join it with another ...but actually take it apart and change it ....

good question, i dont really know of any! a simple search maybe at download.com might help you. If you ever try with AVI, VirtualDUB is excellent!

Look through the afterdawn software downloads and see if they have anything listed.

Here's another question that is related. How do you change a format from say a .mov to.mpeg?

I just know I am going to get fried on this one since it is such a newbie question.

lol no thats a good question with an easy answer! Download, from this site, TMPGEnc and the qtplugin. Install TMPGEnc to a folder then extract the file(s) from the qtoplugin download into your TMPGEnc folder. Then you can open .mov files in TMPGEnc. If you want to encode to vcd/svcd it is as easy as clicking file - project wizard. Man it makes it so easy.

Also mate, make sure u get the most up to date quick time player you can! Thgen you should have no problems!

So, I extract the .mov file into a project folder and then when I chose to save that file, I chose .mpeg format?

Just wanting to make sure. ;-)
