Hi,

I bought some 16X Imation DVD-R from best buy awhile ago when 16X was new amazingly the price of these was the same as 8X. I have a SONY DRU- 530A burner which burns DVD-R at 4X max. But when i go into DVDInfo Pro and test the media to see the mafufacture ID and max speed here is what it shows up as:

[IMG]http://img284.imageshack.us/img284/1066/1ii8.png[/IMG]

The Max is only 4X! DID i get ripped off? Or is the media info dependant on my drives max speed.

I thought the write stratgedy speed is the combination of what your disc can do and what the media can do and brings up the max. BUT the avalible write sector speed is the max of the media in any burner.

I spend 50 min on the phone with Imation guy and he says it only shows max as 4X is becasue of my burner. But i think i have been ripped off and got 4X for my 16X money's worth.

thanks guys

I have a Benq 1640 that shows a 4X write Strategy for Verbatim 16X media. I've burned at 8X and 12X w/o any problem. Also the rep may be right. You see, I've got two burners and both of them display different write strategies for the same media sometimes.

If I always hear voices surrounding me, does it mean Im crazy or that I hear in Dolby 5.1?

The software reports what it detects from the drive. Your Sony will only report 4X unless you find different software that matches MID codes to another data base listing the maximum speed rating per code.

Like I said before, Not Necessarily. Your burner and its firmware will dictate the Burn Speed. Update your firmware to get higher burning speeds. Better yet, buy some quality media. From my experience, Imation media usually code CMC. Buy some Taiyo Yudens, Verbatims, or Riteks (in that order).

I'd say it's your firmware.

Here's the latest that I am aware of:

http://forum.rpc1.org/dl_firmware.php?download_id=1872

Note, this is version 1.0b and is over 2 yrs old.Check and see what firmware version your DRU-540 has.

Older drives will have more trouble with the 16x media.Majority of 4x media is gone,8x media is disappearing quickly. By not updating firmware for drives, the manufacturers are saying those older drives obsolete. This means people have to buy newer burners.

so i got ripped?
No. At least you're getting a 4x burn out of them. If you try other 16x media, they may do the same thing or even kick out an illegal disc error.Imation does use some crappy manufacturers.

I suggest sticking with the 8x speed media. That's all the faster your drive will do.

I couldn't see your pic,is this it?

Edit: I see the pic now. Optodisc, not very good quality. 4x is all your burner is limited to it-which is the firmware.

Make the img tags in lower case,to get your pics to show up.

yeah, Imation use widely varying quality in disc manufacturers, which won't be apparent from simply looking at a tub of Imation disks.
ps Imation bought out Memorex :)

You are lucky then. When I was using Imation I had 30-40% coasters.

Yeah I know. To my defense I can only say Newbies do the darndest things...LOL. I learned my lesson when I discovered AfterDawn. Now I only use TY, Verbs and Riteks (in that order).
