I have a hp a620n and the only thing I added over a year ago was a linksys pci adapter and an ATI Radeon 9200 video card. When I was on it a couple a days it ago it decided froze. So I turned off the computer and turned it back on to see that I have an error saying that NTLDR.dll is missing therefore I couldn't even get to Windows nor safe mode so I looked online and discovered to fix that error I had to have a boot cd with Windows Recovery and press R and 1 and all this stuff. My recovery mode was already built in a second drive so I didn't have a cd. I did what the tutorial said but it didn't do anything nor did any of the stuff popped up so I decided I might as well recover. But when I was recovering I got a bunch of errors saying all this crap was missing but I could only press ok to continue the recovery mode. When I was finished I restarted the computer as it prompted then a new error came up saying, "windows root\system32\hal.dll is missing or corrupt, please re-install" so I decide to run the recovery again but it still says it and I can't get on to Windows. Somebody please help! I do not want to format my computer and lose all my valuable data!

See if you can borrow someone's XP CD to perform the recovery. If the missing dll cannot be replaced by the tutorial's methods, you can still try the repair installation. That will leave your programs intact, but you'll have to reinstall the chipset/video/sound drivers and visit Windows update again.

You might also want to contact HP's support and find out what they have to offer. Your XP is an OEM version, so Microsoft isn't going to help out much, and if HP can't fix it, they will turn you over to MS anyways. HP might even sell you an OEM XP CD, or send you one for free.
