I want to use a double sided dvd-r media to backup my movies, but all I hear is how they are not very compatible with dvd players. Can you give rough percentage of their compatible to the players on the market today. If I'm not misinformed double sides media only come in dvd-r. So how is the movie industry making their movies that are on double side media compatible. What brand is has the most compatibility

OK, you are way of the mark here. There is a big difference between DVD-R double sided and the movie industry double sided. The biggest difference is...there is no such thing as movie industry double sided ;-), however, the Movie industry have what is called Dual Layer DVD's. This are completely different!

Double Sided DVD-R's are essentially two DVD's stuck together, in the broad sense of the term. To read the second side of a Double DVD, you have to remove it from the drive and change it over.

Dual Layer DVD's work on a different frequency. There is one single side, but two layers. The laser switches frequency and re-focuses on the lower level whenever the top level has reached its end. That is why you sometimes get a slight freeze during movies!

To address your question: Double Sided DVD-R, depending on the brand, are just as compatible as a similar single sided DVD-R. There is however, a big price difference. Single DVD-R about £1 ($1.50). Double DVD-R £6($9)

Hope this helps

I think you for you reply. However you didn't fully answer my qestion. I know that the movie industry uses Dual Layer DVD's. The question was pointed more to finding out what media the industry uses. IN my first post I asked "If I'm not misinformed double sides dvd only come in dvd-r media. So how is the movie industry making their movies that are on double side dvd compatible with all dvd players". Example The Painist is on a double side dvd. From my understand this means it's on a dvd-r media which is not compatible to all dvd players. So why would they use this media, and run the chance that someone may buy it an it won't play? Sorry that I didn't make my question clear.

The 'Industry' does not use DVD-R. They dont have DVD-R double Sided disks. Does "The Pianist" have to be taken out and turned over half way through or for extra features? The format used in the 'industry' is DVD-Media, it is not the same as DVD-R adn will play on all DVD Players.

It is strange that we cannot buy in the same format as the industry, but thats a good thing from their point of view. The industry don't tend to use Double Sided disks anymore, everything is either single or dual media.

Hope This helps,
Chris
