I got the case off okay, but now there seems to be screws covering the motor(?)on the inside.
Are there any precautions I should take at this stage?

What version playstation 2 are you opening? Removing the screws on a dvd drive cover is fine, if thats what you are asking, you should take precautions not to knock/damage anything.

Thanks for those, but that seems excessive because all I need to do is take the cover off and take out a piece of plastic that I believe is lodged in there causing my dvd drive not to open.
See, I was attempting to open the ps2 drive with my slide card, and a piece of plastic that came loose when I took off the front clip came off and I believe it is blocking the white tab which is causing the dvd drive to try to open when it can't.

there are 4 screws, 1 ruffly in each corner. Take them out and you can get into the drive.

Yeah, all you do is remove the 4 screws, and lift the drive cover off, then you can remove the tray by removing the 2 screws on the left side, then you lift the tray up from the screw side at a angle of about 30 degrees and you pull it out, and the same with putting it back in.
