Im starting to build my own system in my room (yes thats right, my mum loves me for it), and i need to buy some speakers and a subwoofer. Well, i want to anyway.

The thing is, i have no idea what to look for. I want my subwoofer to take the house out the foundations, and my speakers....well, just to be....good. Lol, loud but not tinney, the usual!

I know there are some speakers that are like £200 and stuff, but i dont want anything that good, i just want a couple of bookshelf speakers and then whatever else u suggest.

Inevitably, cheapers better if it doesnt sacrafice quality. Im not asking for a bunch of links to different products if you cant be bothered, just the specs and bits and bobs i need to look out for.

Thanks peeps,

Billy.

P.S aD's gonna make me bankrupt!

Thanks ireland!![afterdawn legend]

@billy....I wish I had time to help you out on this one but things are nuts ... you'd do well to post your AVR again though so people will know how to adivise you. It all depends what one is connecting their speakers to....Gerry

I looked at the spec sheet for the unit you are using and saw little in the line of useable specs, so I am assuming it uses the typical 80Hz crossover, and an 8 ohm load.

For the speakers you will want to look for an extended frequency range, since you want bookshelves. Without a true midwoofer (because most bookshelves use midrange drivers, not midwoofers) it will be difficult to find solid coherant sub 100Hz output. For this reason my preferance is really for a decent tower, but sometimes we need to sacrifice to save space. I suggest a ported design with a range of ~70Hz-20KHz. The bottom number will be key for a speaker with a good foundation. I suggest a range lower then the crossover point because you need to account for rolloff (the speaker's natural tendancy to lose output at lower frequencies).

The sub is simple really. Look for a decent ported 12-15 inch powered sub. Here again the lower the frequency range listed the better.

If you have a few sources for your area (I assume England), maybe local stores or whatnot, post them here and I will be glad to search their database for modestly priced units that look like they will suit your needs.

@sandt38 and billyboy: I did some research once for inexpensive speakers in the UK ... I remember two that had some good deals and looked pretty good for the money "Mission" and "Acoustic Energy" which I guess are UK makes but I don't remember anything about the specs anymore.
