I started a thread a few weeks ago regarding subtitles http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/35126. The post received a lot of responses but in the end no one could find an answer. So I am going to throw it out here one more time.

The kind of subtitles that I'm interested in are only the ones where foreign languages are spoken and english subtitles are needed to understand. For the purposes of this post I will call them translation subtitles. I don't want the whole movie dialog in subtitles. I have ripped and coded into DivX, 3 movies where there are translation subtitles. On the first, I encoded the movie but there were no translation subtitles at all. What ended up doing is ripping the subs using subrip. At first Subrip ripped the entire dialog but in options I found and selected "Forced Subtitles Only" and then I got what I wanted. But I couldn't encode them in the movie and must keep the .srt file in the same folder as the movie for them to work.

The second movie was completely different. If forced subtitles was turned on, subrip ripped nothing. I had to turn off forced and rip the entire dialog.

On the third movie, after encoding, I found that the translation subtitles were already embedded in the DivX and didn't have to do anything else.

So can anyone explain A.) why these three movies were so different, B.) why it is so hard to get just the translation subtitles to a movie, and C.) in the case of movie one and two, why the translation subtitles are not part of the movie, and if not why I cannot add them.

Im having trouble understanding what you meant by this line---"I don't want the whole movie dialog in subtitles"---what exactly do you mean?

Your problem is in using the wrong program. Subrip will create files that you will need to either burn onto the disk or save on your harddrive until another viewing of the movie, once those files are deleted then you are stuck unless you rip the subtitles again.

You may have remembered my last suggestion was to use vobsub. What the virtualdub filter does is exactly what you want...It will permanently burn the subtitles into your movie. No need to lug extra text files with vobsub.

If you are watching a movie on dvd and you turn on subtitles, then what happens is that every word spoken in the movie is shown at the bottom of the screen. That's what I mean by entire dialog. Now, let's say you have subtitles turned off and you are watching, say a 007 movie or something where a character is sometimes speaking in another language. Usually, whatever the character is saying is shown in English subtitles so you know what is being said, even if subtitles are turned off. I have ripped 2 movies where these "translation subtitles" are not in the DivX at all after encoding and I don't understand that. For one of the movies, I subsequently ripped the subtitles using subrip and selected "Forced Subtitles Only" option and it only ripped the translation subtitles. However for the other movie this didn't work and I had to rip the entire english subtitles so that every spoken word is now shown.

This was my first problem. The other question was dealing with embedding the ripped subtitles. I tried vobsub before based on your suggestion but it didn't embed the subtitles. I don't know if I did it right though. I chose the vobsub filter while in virtual dub and selected my SRT file but there were no subs in the final product.

When you use vobsub you will need to choose the .ifo file that was ripped along with the .vob files. From what youve posted, vobsub probably can't work with .srt files. I havent come to a problem like you have though, when i want subs its usually for the entire movie. Ill try to do some more research and see if i can help you out.

I understand what you're talking about. I've been trying to get the "forced" subs from The Bourne Identity DVD, but I how do I get the sub file in the first place? VobSub doesn't seem to point me in the right direction...
