I Bought a Brand New HP Computer?? Why Won't ANY Discs Burn??

Please help..

I am using a HP DVD Writer 640c and I can't seem to burn ANY DVD's or CD's...


DVD+R'z don't work and neither do DVD-R's.

I have been seeking the firmware, but I can't seem to find a legitimate firmware update and I am afraid to download any second hand firmware.


Please Respond ASAP

Hi.

Does the drive playback DVDs?
Does the device show up in the My Computer window?

Let's try resetting the drive and IDE channels and see if that helps.

Right click on My Computer and select Properties.
Click the Hardware tab.
Click the Device Manager button.
Click the "+" beside DVD/CD-ROM Drives.
Right click on the name of your DVD burner and select Uninstall.
Click OK.

Still in Device Manager:

Click the "+" beside IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers.
Right click on the Primary Channel and select Uninstall.
Click OK.
Right click on the Secondary Channel and select Uninstall.
Click OK.

Restart the system.

Hopefully your drive will work after doing this. Let us know how you make out.

Edit: Added

This is the link to the 640c/i HP firmware. The version is QS12. Apparently the c and i models use the same firmware since the search for the 640c leads to the 640i firmware link on the HP site.
