I have successfully used softwares like Decrypter and Shrink to back up my DVD's before, but have a question regarding something that seems so simple...
I have some DVD-R's that I have recorded on my DVD recorder (backups of VHS tapes).
Since they are not too large to fit on a DVD-R as it stands, can I merely drag and drop the files from these DVD-R's onto my hard drive for backup? If this does indeed work, how would I go about burning them onto DVD-R later?
This would allow me to make faster copies as going from DVD player to DVD recorder would be real time...

if the backups are already on a SL(4.7g) disk then u can use
DVD Decrypter, to rip to the HDD u use MODE/ISO/READ, then when u want to burn the ISO from ur HDD to a disk then u do MODE/ISO/WRITE,
using DVD Decrypter or, should only take around 5-10mins to rip to ur HDD.

So basically, the files that I dragged and dropped are useless? Or can DVD Decrypter turn these into an ISO?
Sorry, I am at my work computer. If I was at home I probably could just try this...

No, you're right. You can just drag them from the DVD-R onto your HDD and then burn them as data if you want. Since you burned it from a video source, they're not encrypted. You can drag and drop to your heart's content.

no they r not useless, but u will need to use a program like Nero or imgBurn to burn them on a dvd that will play on a dvd player.
if u burn them as data they wont play back on a dvd player.
Do u have Nero?
if not u can use ImgBurn to burn them

I actually have Nero and Intervideo DVD Copy, which works well for burning files to DVD. I will test this out later.
I want to make a copy of an old tv (read as cetainly not protected material) show available via Bit Torrent and would hate to be the guy that allowed someone to download 4.7 GB of useless data...
If I had to rip it via a different program rather than just drag and drop I would...

NO, bowler is not correct. Music, video, whatever, it's all 1s and 0s. If you drag and drop the files from your DVD, your dragging the VIDEO_TS and AUDIO_TS folders that contain the video files for the DVD. So YES, you can just burn it as data, because you're burning those folders back onto a DVD, just how they were originally. It's the same as just doing a disc-to-disc copy.
While you CAN use Nero or Imageburn, you don't NEED to. That's all I'm saying. Just because it's video, does not mean it isn't data. The disc doesn't care, as long as the formats are the same when it's on the disc, it will play in a DVD player.

I had originally just put the DVD in, opened the folder and dragged the files to desktop.

In Nero u have to select DVD-VIDEO for the dvd to play in a dvd player not any of the other options

I knew what you meant. When I asked for an interpreter, it was a joke.
I assumed by the Homer Simpson pictures, you'd be up for humor.

Just my two cents. You have the files already in your hdd. You have Nero and Intervideo DVD copy. Use any of those two programs, and selecte "from files" as source.
