Hi everyone.

I have just purchased a DVD+RW drive, it's in the mail.

Have been looking at media for this beast. From my reading, I still have some questions.

I will be using a NEC ND1100A drive, this is a second gen drive (4X write +R, 2.4X write +RW). A few basic questions please:

1) Lots of media I see don't mention write speed (nor the word "PLUS"). May I presume that these are for gen 1 drives? What is the "default" write speed for +R and +RW?

2) I have seen +R media that boast 2.4X write speed. My unit can write +R at 4X. Can one expect problems if one attempts to write to media that is SLOWER than the rated max (question applies to both +R and +RW media)?

3) Concerning +RW disks...do they have to/can they be "finalized"? Or, are they forever RW?

4) I've read the suggestion when selecting un-tried media, buy smallest amount possible and test compatability. Given that +RW disks are more expensive than +R, if I "test" with a +R disk and have positive results, can I infer that the same brand's +RW disks will likewise (probably) not present a problem?

5) Is there a good source of info on the "mechanics" of the interaction of the drive to the media? For example, I don't understand what the speed rating of the disk has to do with drive compatability.

Thanks everyone.

You are in the wrong section of the forum. This is CD-R.

Question 1: DVD-R is the standard when + isnt mentioned. DVD-R means DVD (minus) R. There is no default, it depends on the drive you have and the type of disc. Some discs rated at 4x bont wont write at 4x on some machines.

Question 2: No, there is not a problem writing to media that is slower than your maximum writing speed. You can select the speed you wish to write at in the burning packages that you use.

Question 3: Finalizing RW discs is possible, though generally there is not much need for it. You can still re-write a finalized disc.

Question 4: No - There is a big difference between R and RW, testing R will not certify an RW disc. Buy test packs of discs before you buy in bulk.

Question 5: Drive compatibility has to do with the way in which your particular format records. +R recording is not quite as compatible with standalone DVD Players as -R. It all depends on the media. When you buy a disc, it isnt good enough to assume that the make is all you need to know about the disc. The type of dye used on the surface is the key factor. Ritek, Princo, etc.. make the dyes for the discs. The dye is what makes a disc compatible. Ritek G04's are the best.
