My son just purchased a PS2 w/mod chip from a friend. However, I don't know what kind of mod chip is installed in the game. What do I need in order to play backups?
Well you could open up the console and look what type it is and look up the faqs on it online but most modchips (assuming they work fine) should play backups immediately with no extra needed steps. Just make the game into an iso through dvd decryptor and burn that iso through dvd decryptor.

You can open up the system, locate the chip and see what name is written on it, most mod chips have auto-boot, so you dont need to do anything like swapping disks to play backups, you just simply insert the disk, and it should play, you can burn a ps2 using DVD Decrypter, you will first have to read the original disk, and create an .iso, then you click on the write option, and burn the iso onto a disk. There are also stickies in the DVD Backup forum which should help you out if you need help in backing up games.
I used DVD Decrypter, put it on burn speed 1X and the game did not work. I put it on a 16X Verbatim DVD-R. Maybe I am using the wrong discs? Also, what if the game is bigger than the required disc?
What version is the ps2, if you dont know, then post back the serial number which starts with SCPH-XXXXX, the X's is replaced by numbers. Try to burn the game at half the speed of the DVD's max speed, try 8x or 4x. And did you find out what mod chip you have installed?
Some chips have goofy ways of booting. One chip I installed required you to turn the system on (out of standby) by pressing the Eject button. You then put the burned game in the drive, and pressed Eject again.
