You have updated the fw on this drive, but did you use the right one. You either have a drive that is a true NEC in which case it would use 1.0b which is NEC's last update, or the hacked fw of 1.0c. Or you have a OEM drive that came with the computer and then you would need the proprietary firmware. You need to flash with the correct one. I have this drive and it only writes at 4x, it will recognize some newr 16x media, I have used Verbatim and Fuji and both work with the drive using 1.0b firmware. It will do all 8x media. This is an old drive it may just be wearing out. Here is the fw updates for this burner, see if you can find the correct one for your NEC.

First of all, TDK and sometimes Sony are garbage; as a general rule, only buy media made in Japan, like Verbatim. Always check the label. You should try to update the firmware from NEC's site or using firmware from rpc1.org (try http://liggydee.cdfreaks.com/page/1300/ Try 1.0C). Odds are good that your drive does recognize newer discs.

P.S. $25 for 50 - hate to tell ya buy you got gypped. Wait for Verbatim to go on sale for $15 per 50 or buy Taiyo-Yuden from supermediastore.com for about $33 each shipped.

-Do you believe you own your computer and shouldn't be told what you can run and do? Then say *NO* to Microsoft Vista!
-Since half the questions here involve media problems, here ya go: Only use Verbatim or Taiyo-Yuden discs (get your TYs from Rima.com, not Supermediastore or meritline). Forget the rest, no matter what "brand" they sell under. Always burn at 4x speed regardless of the speed rating of this discs or your drive. If you have burn problems with these then you have to update your drive's firmware. For double-layer discs, only use Verbatim DVD+R DL and burn them at 2.4x speed.

Sony media is considered first class, especially Made in Japan.

Verbatim media is not Made in Japan but in Taiwan, Singapore and India.

Not always, but, generally, Sony obeys the MIJ rule. They have been known to mix in cheaper stuff from time to time. However, you're right, I stand corrected about the Verbatim being made in Taiwan, etc.

But it's still good stuff...!:)
