Can anyone help, I have a NEC RW ND-2510A re writer, and normally use Maxell DVD+ blank dvds to write data & movies on, however I have tried using DVD- discs lately and I am having problems. I don't know if the drive is multi writing (+ & -), but when I try to write a movie to a certain make DVD- disc its says 'incompatible media'... Example, I tried using a disc made by 'DataStore' dvd minus disc in the drive and it worked, wrote the movie fine and played on my dvd player, but when I used a 'Maxell' DVD minus disc I got the incompatible media message... Is it possible that the drive will only work with certain make minus discs? Strange thing is the Maxell discs are recognised in the drive as being a blank disc but won't let me write anything to it...

I have just checked my drive using some software, and a dvd writer review article and it is indeed dual layer and reads/writes +/- discs..so why not work with Maxell?

if you've got Nero, use it's info-tool program to determine the firmware revision you have now, that will help tell us which 'variety you have.
according to the link i gave you, this burner is either retail NEC, or rebadged by Iodata (never heard of that one), Fujitsu, Mad Dog or Dell.
if you don't use Nero, snag the info-tool program here -

I have an NEC 2510 as well. It is no longer my primary drive, but I keep it around because it is still a workhorse. When it was first released, it was a highly sought after drive. A wealth of information about it can be found here http://club.cdfreaks.com/forumdisplay.php?f=86
There are a ton of firmware options for this drive.

I just had the same problem with my NEC 3500A, I've been using Sony -R's for years now, never had a problem but the last batch I picked up were newer (Up to 16x Old ones were upto 8x) and I got the same message from Nero. I used DVD Identifier just to make sure they were real Sony's and they coded as SONY. I then upgraded my firmware to the lastest verison and it fixed the problem, haven't had any problems since!

I have mine installed on my other pc, but if memory serves me correct? I am running the Dangerous Brothers version of the Mad Dog 2.F8 with the Region and Rip Lock Speeds removed. I would suggest you try several and find out which works best for your media. I know that there is a more recent version of the Mad Dog out there, I just left mine alone because it was working well for me. I know that the Herrie firmware was very popular as well.
Happy Burning..........

Flashing is not hard, but be aware that although unlikely, you can ruin a drive if not done correctly. Since you are new to it, I would suggest you stick with Windows based until you know a little more. Go here http://tdb.rpc1.org/ scroll down to the NEC ND-2510A portion. Download the MAD DOG DVD+R SL and DL, and DVD+RW Book Type Version "2.f8 Windows"
It will have three exe. files and a read me. Take a look at the read me and it will describe each of the three exe. and give explanation on how to flash. It is very straight forward. I would suggest the 2510RPC1.EXE, as it is the one with the region free and rip lock removed.
Good luck........

No guarantee, but if the firmware is the cause it will correct it. Most drive issues are firmware related. If it reads fine and writes to other medias, I would bank on it being firmware.
