Help please, my kids are driving me nuts. Their PS2 will play PS1 games but not PS2 games. I have followed online advice and tried adjusting the laser height but this doesn't help. I have noticed that PS1 discs seem to spin smoothly as soon as loaded but PS2 discs stutter to build up speed - is this related?

i recomend doing the cleaning methods mentioned in this guide and if that dosent work try replacing the laser arm because that is normally a common cop up.
good luck

Thanks for all your advice. I tink it is a v9. 50003 number on back. When I opened it, it had two small adjustable white plastic cogs...

I think you'll probably find that the console plays CD based games but not DVD one's. Its just the sign of old age I'm afraid, its a common problem.
If cleaning your lens doesn't work then a new laser is the only answer - £30/$50.

Even if it starts to work again it would just be for a little. It's time to get a new laser.
You could also try hd loader your laser should read it since you can buy it on cd but thats extra work because you would have to take the HDD out of the ps2 and put it in your pc to load on each game
