I am new to these concepts, so bear with me. I was wondering what specifically is required in order to backup playstation 2 games. Can instant copy by itself do it? Do I need a ripper? Are hardware configurations needed on the console?

Hardware configurations are needed. You need to install a mod chip of some sort. PS2 emulators are handy for creating PS2 back-ups.

This is in the wrong section.

However I am a newbie to ps2 backups, you can create an image OR copy 'on the fly'.

Just done it successfully with on the fly with recnowmax.

However I do believe you require some sort of worklaround for your PS2.

Modchip or swipcard etc.
