JVC Player Reset Code/Sequence?

My JVC DVD player (XV-N512S, about $130) seems prone to totally locking up when a disc is dirty (I now always wash them first) or otherwise damaged. No button combination that I can find will unlock it. The disc is whirring around but otherwise the unit is in a coma. Turning off the power gets it back.

The manual does not describe a less brute force way to unlock it. I can't get to the player's power cord so I have to throw a circuit breaker which also causes the TV to be reset, etc.

Google searches have not turned up an unlock code or sequence either.

Anyone know of one or how to find one?
