I was wondering if I have to use DVD+RW discs discs to backup movies with this burner? I've been using DVD Shrink to back up movies such as ATL and Dirty and both of them skip and eventully freeze and cut off. I use DVD+R discs. I also use DVD Shrink according to the guide on this website to backup just the main movie.
Your disk quality could have a lot to do with it. What type of disk are you burning to? Are you running the movies through Fab Decrypter before you shrink? Are you using VobBlanker or PgcEdit? And as far as if the media has to be RW, no a +R or -R will work.
On the two movies you mentioned are they Sony films? If they are FixVts might not work. As far as Memorex brand, they are not bad but I prefer Taiyo Yuden, Verbatim, Fujifilm. I burned with Memorex quite a while back and had the same problems you are having now. What speed are you burning at? Maybe slow your burn speed down to 4x. Also make sure you are not burning to the edge of the DVD! For example my shrink is set to custom output max 4360. Burning too close to the edge can cause problems.
Go to Edit and select Preferences. Under the Preferences tab select Custom for Target DVD Size and type 4360 in the box next to it. I also have, "Automatically open VIDEO_TS subfolders" checked and, "Run analysis and baackup in low priority monde to improve multi-tasking" checked.
If you are doing movie only you shouldn't have a problem. You can however, do full backup. You just need to learn to use VobBlanker. It is a free program. If you want me to walk you through using it, I will be happy to. Let me know.
Set size limit in preferences which is listed under edit at top left of DVD Shrink window, use drop down where it says[ DVD 5 (4.75)] and change to custom, you should see some numbers that are greyed out beside the stuff i put in brackets
Two things: First, I'm surprised no one has mentioned bitsetting/booktyping. Some drives do not bitset DVD+R to DVD-ROM. I see someone mentioned the NEC ND-3550A and that is one that DOES NOT bitset single-layer +Rs. It does bitset DLs though. That means your only option for DVD-5 if you want good compatibility, aside from using a hacked firmware like Liggy's and Dee's, is to use DVD-R. Second, if you are using the ND-3550A and Memorex media, that might be the problem. Memorex has been using Ritek G05 in some of their 16x offerings, and I've noticed that my ND-3550A has lots of problems with the Memorex/Ritek G05.
-Do you believe you own your computer and shouldn't be told what you can run and do? Then say *NO* to Microsoft Vista!
-Since half the questions here involve media problems, here ya go: Only use Verbatim or Taiyo-Yuden discs (get your TYs from Rima.com, not Supermediastore or meritline). Forget the rest, no matter what "brand" they sell under. Always burn at 4x speed regardless of the speed rating of this discs or your drive. If you have burn problems with these then you have to update your drive's firmware. For double-layer discs, only use Verbatim DVD+R DL and burn them at 2.4x speed.
