Dual Layer is disc that holds 8.5 (DVD9) (7.95)G of data as opposed to a regular DVD (DVD5) which holds 4.7 (4.38). One way to tell would be to look up your burner model on the web and see its specs. It also may even say Dual Layer on the tray.
