i just installed an additional internal DVD drive (a 16x dvd burner) and im having trouble turning both drives to DMA as opposed to PIO. I started by installing the second drive as "cable select" and when i tried to back up a DVD my speeds didnt go any higher than 1x (both drives were set to cable select). I tried to change the DMA (device manager->IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers->Secondary IDE Channel->properties->advanced settings) but only device 0 could be set in DMA mode while device 1 is stuck at PIO mode. I then switched the settings on my drives and made my new DVD burner as the master and my stock CD burner/DVD Rom the slave. I was able to set the DMA on for the new DVD burner but now i can set my DVD Rom to DMA mode (now its stuck on PIO mode). How can i make both drives stay on DMA mode. I know both can be turned on to DMA mode since i toggled/reversed both drives, but it only seems to be working when the drive is "device 0" in the secondary IDE channel. Please help. thanks

Lets start with how your drives are hooked up. You seem have the master and slave setting correct with the jumper setting already.

Set the new DVD writer as master (make sure it is connect at the end of the IDE cable)

Set your CD burner/DVD Rom to slave ( make sure it is connected to the middle of the IDE cable)

You might have to delete all your IDE channels (in device manager) and reboot and let windows reinstall all of them automaticly.

Thanks for the response larrylje

I have my drives set they way you stated, with my new DVD burner as the master and my stock DVD-rom as the slave. The slave is hooked up to the middle of the IDE cable.

As for the second part, can you give me instructions on how i go about deleting all of my IDE channels in the device manager.

thanks

Control Panel/System (in the list)/HARDWARE TAB/CLICK DEVICE MANAGER

Go to IDE Controlers in the list.

Now right click each of the IDE Channels and click uninstall.

Once there uninstaled reboot your computer and windows will reinstall them. Hopfully it will be in DMA mode at this time.
