I was wondering if the smoothness of the sides of the disc have any affect on its performance? I recently purchased 25 datasafe media silver discs, which are normally very reliable, and have had several fail or give poor playback performance. Then I noticed that they where more coarse on the side that normal.

The actual sides of the disc are irrelevant to the performance of the disc. However, with the edges being course, that is not normal. This could be the problem causing you're 'coasters'. Bad batches sometimes are rough round the edges. This is down to shaudy workmanship, if the term applies. It really depends where they came from. Are these Ritek discs? What batch number are they. if you get more coasters than normal, make a formal complaint to Datawrite, you might be surprised with the response (DVD's) you get.

Smootheness is not normally a problem but check the write side to see if there are any blemishes or marks. The purple dye should be uniform and not blotchy. They are probably Ritek G03 discs but I have had a few bad Datasafe Ritek discs myself recently. I think they are old discs of atleast a year old since the datasafe logo doesn't exist anymore. To avoid this in future make sure you order Datawrite and if they send you datasafe instead send them back as a precaution and don't take no for an answer since they are obviously trying to get rid of old (poor) stock.
