I just got my PS2 and the constant loading is killing me. I'm thinking of getting a network adaptor and a hard-drive setup so that I can just rip my games to the hard-drive then play from there.
Surprisingly I've got little interest in pirating so I'd rather avoid a mod-chip if possible. The PS2 is the fat design and I've looked into it so I know that if it comes down to it I shouldn't have any problems installing one.

I've read around and all the tutorials/FAQs/articles seem to assume that you've got a mod-chip in your PS2, but none ever state directly that you need a mod-chip (or something to load unbranded discs).

So the first question is do I need something like swap-magic or a mod-chip to format the hard-drive, load the software and rip/play my games?
Or is it possible to use something like Norton Ghost to transfer an image of someone elses pre-configured hard-drive over?

Second question, as I said before I'm looking for something to minimize loading. I know no matter what I'm still going to have some loading, even if it loads almost instantly it still needs to wait for the animation to catch up, but can anyone give me an idea of just how much faster games load from a hard-drive?

Also, I've heard about homebrew media players but I was wondering if the HD software I would be using (HDLoader I think) comes with the built in ability to store DVD movies on the hard-drive the way it stores games. It'd be nice not having to search through a pile of DVDs everytime I wanted to watch something.

If you don't get a modchip/swap magic, then you must BUY hdadvance (i don't think they sell hdloader anymore). But, if you want homebrew and dvd movies on your hd, a good modchip is the way to go.
