I have been writing great DVDs with this Memorex drive for 6 months and hundreds of CD-Rs. Now I get constant errors! I shut down all other processes, unplug the network, put the drive on its own dedicated IDE controller, NOTHING is helping. The most recent and most frequent error in Nero is the SCSI TARGET ERROR. I don't understand as it an IDE drive and I have all of my drivers updated, I think.

Here is my latest log. Help would be SO much appreciated!

Make sure that when you updated your drivers you didnt update them with a SCSI driver. I've known this to happen and cause similar problems to what you are describing.

Does it only ever happen with Disc-At_once setting?

Also, it looks like it is trying to access a SCSI device:

Actually, I only updated the firmware for the Memorex (after the errors began to get tiresome) and the driver that came with the IDE controller card that I used do that the DVD drive would have it's own dedicated controller (also after the problems).

I don't understand what I could do about your other comment regarding the device asking for a SCSI device...? What can I do about that?

THANKS SO much for your help, Oriphus! I have been beating myself up with this for two weeks and if I can find an answer, I would send somebody some free blank media, or something for their efforts!

there has to be an answer...

And yes, I always and always have written DAO.

You are very welcome, but there is no need for blank Discs, ;-)

When you updated the Memorex firmware, did you use an official site, or an unofficial. Can you remember what the update was called?

I had a similar poblem with my Sony last year. Turned out it was a problem with the drive.
Is your drive still under warranty? If so, I would get it exchanged or repaired.

This is directly from the error log generated by Nero:

Status: 0x04 (0x01, SCSI_ERR)

Things look bad for me. I guess I will have to start shopping for another drive. Warranty was only 90 days. I got 180 days out of that piece of junk Memorex. :(

If you do get another drive, go for a pioneer DVRA05. If your in the UK http://www.bigpockets.co.uk have amazing deals on it.

So do you think my Memorex has had it?

I am in the U.S. I will do a search for that pioneer unit.

Do they have a good warranty? :)

Yes, I'm afraid it looks like your drive is faulty. Most probably a laser failure of some sort.
I haven't had any problems with my Sony drive since, so if you're happy with your Memorex drive, just get a replacement.

Thanks for trying guys. I think I'm going to go out and buy the Pioneer DVR A05 and go with the CompUSA 2yr. replacement guarantee, all for under $300. That way, I am assured a working drive for two years.

I bought the Pioneer DVR-A05U today and tossed it in at lunch. Looks like everything is fine except I will probably have to reinstall Fireburner and Nero. FB won't recognize it, and my version of Nero only works with Memorex (it was included). Clone CD worked fine, CDRWin worked fine. I can't wait to get home from work and put it through some tests.

It cost $229 and I also bought a 2yr. replacement policy for $45. So, I should be good for a while.

Thanks for being so cool and happy burning!

Hope everything works out well for you. Try using DVD Shrink to rip and compress back-ups and Record Now Max 4.50 by Stomp to burn your DVD's, you will have more success that way.

OK, so I paid a few dollars more, but I have a store down the street to take it to, and a two year replacement guarantee. Better than trying to get a refund from a faceless internet retailer. I was just tired of buying expensive stuff that only lasts a year, like the PS2.

Anyway, I have encountered an issue. When burning with the A05U on the included 4x media, Nero told me it was burning at 4x, however, it took over 40 minutes. The Memorex used to burn at 2.4x and it only took about 25 minutes! What's up with that? Additionally, the Pioneer uses a heck of a lot more of the CPU according to the task manager, than the memorex ever did.

As usual, input would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Goalie

Yes, 1.30 firmware. I have only used the Pioneer 4x media. I also bought some cheap K-hypermedia disks and they only burn at 1x and also the movies have errors! Any recommendations on media and/or if my firmware is up to date?

Thanks

I think the firmware you are using is fine. It should def. work with the Pioneer own media. I wouldnt buy the cheapest media on the market. Try Ritek G04's

Nothing but JOY with Verbatim, although I got them at over $2 each. Ten for ten with movie backups. I am also going to experiment this weekend with Maxell, since dvd-dupply.com ran out of Universal media. Aaaaaaaaanyway, looks like this thread is complete. Here are my stats for anyone getting into this hobby, this thread may be educational:

Pioneer DVR-A105U
(with 2x firmware crack)
Windows XP Home
1.4 gigHz Athlon
Smartripper 2.41
DVD2one 1.0.0.0 or DVD Shrink if I want to keep special features.
Nero 5.5.1.35 to burn (DVD, UDF/ISO mode with "Force DVD Compatibilty" on the UDF screen and "Joliet" deselected.)
K-hyper media = garbage every time
Verbatim 2x = perfect every time

Thanks to everyone who contributed. This forum is the BEST!!!
