-Do you believe you own your computer and shouldn't be told what you can run and do? Then say *NO* to Microsoft Vista!
-Since half the questions here involve media problems, here ya go: Only use Verbatim or Taiyo-Yuden discs (get your TYs from Rima.com, not Supermediastore or meritline). Forget the rest, no matter what "brand" they sell under. Always burn at 4x speed regardless of the speed rating of this discs or your drive. If you have burn problems with these then you have to update your drive's firmware. For double-layer discs, only use Verbatim DVD+R DL and burn them at 2.4x speed.

Emzaid,

I looked at the explanations suggested, and they are pretty lame. There is no real quality difference between the two formats, but they differ in the following ways:
DVD-R
--uses pre-pits to mark addresses in data storage
--requires a two-beam laser for glass mastering because of the pre-pit shape
--uses video sequential recording format--video or files can only be added to the last recorded section (makes no difference on a non-erasable disc)
--requires intialization after being manufactured, an extra step that adds a slight amount of extra cost to each disc.
--approved by the DVD Forum and compatible with most DVD players.

DVD+R
--uses a high-frequency wobble as the address system along with ADIP information (Some people claim this method of lossless linking of appended files is more reliable than the pre-pit method, and that argument has some theoretical if not practical value.)
--single-beam glass master system is sufficient
--uses a format designed for both video and data, but this makes no difference for a non-erasable medium, only for DVD+RW.
--no initilization needed
--not approved by the DVD Forum, but drive manufacturers can "lie" about the disc and call it a "DVD-ROM" by altering the bit setting against DVD Forum specifications. This allows recorded discs to have a slight advantage on DVD players that strictly follow DVD Forum rules.

I hope this explanation is more useful than the others you found. If so, maybe the moderator can post it on the site because someone asks this question at least twice a month.

Sounds like a silly question but is there any difference between Verbatim DVD+R and DVD-R as far as quality is concerned.

Just wondering because user reviews gave +R better ratings than -R

The only reason I can think of that people would rate +Rs better than -Rs is because of the ability to bit-set the DVD+Rs to DVD-ROM format.

With -R you don't need to bother with bitsetting. Of course, if you have a drive that bitsets both single and double-layer DVD+Rs, you should have no problem, but lots of drives either don't bitset one or the other (e.g. NEC ND-3550A), or don't bitset at all.

There is no quality difference between the formats. Video should look no different recorded on one format when compared to the other.
