after reading it doesn't ask for a blank dvd to burn to anymore--says backup is complete and ready for burning with appropriate software

never had problems before--why now

Make sure you are selecting your drive as the target and not HD folder, also make sure that you have "enable burning with Nero" ticked in DVD Shrinks options.
