I have a question. Ive been wanting to backup my ps2 games, because I do alot of traveling, and my games wear down quick. Which method is the best; HDloader, Swap Magic, the usb harddrive thing, etc. I need one for the most compatibility between all the games and dual layer dvd games. Also what all do I need for it programs, devices? I have the latest ps2 before they switched to the slim ps2. Thanks for any help.

Sorry for double post, but the reason im having trouble deciding, is the capabilites of playing online. Ive heard swap can go online but no DVD-9, and i heard hdloader can do DVD-9 but no online. Is there a in between to do DVD-9 (GT4) and also play online or a mod to one or another to make work? thanks.

a mod chip would be the best option hands down. With hdloader you don't really use it to play backups, you basically use it to load games on a hdd that you attach to the ps2 but not all games work 100%.

NTSC DNAS threads.

I think a good mod chip should cover all your needs just get a good one and you'll be fine.

DMS4 all the way. Just don't try to play any pirated games (if you do that kind of thing) online.

So DMS4 will play online, is there anything else I have to modify add, or change to play backups online or is that it?

No game can go online while it is installed through the hard drive.
Your options modchip wise are to either get the DMS4 and use its built in hd game copying program and use that for offline games and then when you want to go online you need to make a backup disc of the online game and patch what is called the DNAS, when you go to put that in you need to turn off your DMS4.
Or you can get a Matrix Infinity (make sure you get an authentic one) and do pretty much the same thing as above except instead of using a built in hd copier you would need to download hdloader for free.
This third option is best for online gamers as you do not need to patch the backup games to go online, it automatically does it for you.
The crystal chip, as with the matrix infinity just download hdloader to boot games off the hd and just burn backups of your online games, good to go.

which one is the easiest? Ive heard the hd isn't 100 percent compatible. On the three options you gave me, which one will be the simplest with just a backup cd, no harddrive?

With no hard drive and just backups I'd go for the crystal chip since you do a lot of online gaming.

Okay, problem. Ive found out that I have the v9/v10 ps2 and I have to do lots of sodering to make it work, Romeo mod, Mod chip, lots of money, no soder skills around this area. Is there a no mod chip option or a soderless romeoless mod chip avaliable? Ive heard good things about swap magic, except for the DVD-9 issue. Is there a way I can convert DVD9 to DVD5? If necessary I can use originals to play online, im just looking for the cheapest method. Thanks.

You only need the romeo mod if you get a modchip - it's a laser protection issues.
I have also used swap magic and they work great, there is a solderless option (dms chip) available but they are even more expensive and lots have problems with them.
Swap magic will allow backups (and obviously originals) to go online so your fine there, DVD9 in most cases can be converted to DVD5 but it's a bit complicated, there are guides though.

Oh, and to answer your last post yes, the crystal chip along with the others will play offline games too.

Actually HDloader is the real program, HDAdvance is just an outdated retail version.
Therefore I'd go for the swap magic discs, once you have those you can do what is called a memory card exploit, it is actually a lot simpler than most people make it out to be, I can help you out (or someone else) when the time comes but you basically use a program called the independence exploit. All you need is ANY psone game and a memory card.
Through this exploit you can set it up to automatically boot to the latest HDLoader which is available for download free at sksapps.com under the hd section, the best part is that it has an even higher compatability and you never have to pay for an updated pair of discs on them.
Also, with swap magic you can play the backups online, you can't do that through hdadvance.

A PS2 Memory card with about 1 meg of space free.
You'd be using this program to set it up:
http://www.sksapps.com/exploit/independencecompiler4.1-titlefix.zip
And here's the latest copy of HDLoader:
http://www.sksapps.com/hd/HDL_8B_ELF.rar
Also here's the latest copy of ULaunchELF, a program used for the exploit:
http://www.sksapps.com/launchers/uLaunchELF_v3.94.zip
(you only need the boot.elf file contained inside the extracted folder)

How the program works is that you enter in a titleDB which can be obtained by inserting your PSone game disc into the computer and hitting get id (obviously this is assuming that you have told it the correct disc drive). Be sure to hit "add to Title.db" to actually set that id (also, if you want this memory card exploit to work with any of your psone games then insert each and every one of them and hit the add button each time.

Next go to the loader tab, and choose other and locate the boot.elf file that you downloaded earlier.

Go to the files tab and hit "browse for file" and select the extracted HDLoader file we also got earlier.

Skip IP options for now and go to the region tab, if you have a Japanese or US ps2 select NTSC, if it's european select PAL.

Skip Extras and go to the create exploit tab, make sure that the output format "CD Image" button is clicked along with the 'yes' under "installer only".
You're all done, hit create exploit and it will generate an image file which you can burn in Nero or Alcohol 120%.

Next you need to create a homemade slide card out of an old credit card or sturdy id, make it look like this:
http://www.exploitstation.com/articles/FAQ9_files/FAQ9_html_7039d...

what you have to do is (assuming your swap magic discs have now arrived) is you need to unscrew the front of your PS2 tray (don't worry this only needs to be done once) by first making sure there's no disc in your PS2 and the power is unplugged, flip it upside down with the tray ejected but the power plug out. There is a small screw under there remove it and you will be able to gently ease off the front cover (if you plan to do alot of backup copies of online games then you can leave this off).
Now turn it back over, insert your swap magic CD disc (not the DVD one) and boot it up until the PS2 stops at the "load program screen."
Instead of hitting the eject button what you have to do is if you look underneath the drive tray, you will notice a small white pin near the Middle. Using the slide card, you push this pin to the right, unlocking the DVD drive tray. You then pull the tray out, change the disc with the exploit disc you burned earlier, push it back in, and slide the pin back to the left, re locking the drive.
Now hit run program, a little bit later, assuming all has went well it will say done, complete, or something to that extent. Your exploit is now done and you can use that backup disc as a frisbee if you deem it necessary.

Now just insert your PSone game that you got the ID from earlier, it will look as if it booted as normal but then you should be re-routed to the ULaunch program. through here navigate through your memory card until you find the HDloader elf file and select it, you're now at the hdloader screen.

The best part about it is that you don't have to swap discs out and you now have the most recent version always, if a new one comes out you can transfer it to the ps2 over a usb flash drive and renaming it to exactly the same thing as the old one was and replacing the old with the new in the same area.

This seems kind of lengthy but it is actually very easy to do and doesn't take long at all.

I have a flip top case on the ps2 which will make things easier, also I have a lexar 256mb usb flash drive. Do I just put the elf file in there alone, the whole thing like on the cdrom. Asuming I load it the same way with a ps one. Is Hdloader set up similar to hdadvance like in menues options. Ive used hdadvance 2.0 before. I hate to ask so many questions, but with my luck kaboom! Where can I get patches of the games to play online, example I own XIII, and do i install patch on elf in memory card or on backup itself (if backup what software). Thanks for all the help you gave me so far, some people wouldn't care to give me guides and links to the files I needed.
