i've heard that dvd writers crap out after some time? is this true? also, is it bad to decrypt dvd's using ur writer? my friend (who isn't very reliable) told me to buy a dvd-rom just for the purpose of ripping.

There are like any other piece of electronics - they can eventually fail - but when???????

Personally, I use a seperate dvd rom for ripping mainly because - like your freind says it could lead to failure of your writer (not overnight though).

But my main resons:

I can backup on the fly (home dvd's that I have created)

Also you will find you cannot rip very quickly using your writer - a seperate dvdrom will enable you to rip upto 11x in some cases.

Baabaa what way have you got your DVD Writer/ROM set up. Do you put thm on the same iDE channel. I have a 52X CD WRiter that i want to keep, so i was thinking of putting it on a seperate IDE channel.
Whats your thoughts on this

i have a dvd-rom drive that stopped playing dvds a few months ago. think i should buy a new drive or try and fix the old one? i already tried cleaning it with one of those cleaners, but that did nothing.
thanks

Cleaners can sometimes damage or even put the lense out of focus. Since they dont cost that much i would just buy one!

Oriphus, funny really cos I never could get the 'on the fly' to work until recently.

As follows:

Main HD as primary master
DVD ROM as primary slave
DVD Rewriter as secondary master
DVDROM/CD rewriter combo as secondary slave

I use the main dvdrom (primary slave) as my READER for dvd/cd and the other 2 for writing either dvd or cd's.
(do not use my dvd rewriter to burn cd's though)

This works mint in my setup using recnowmax or nero - no more buffer underruns........

My initial problem was that I had my reader and writer on the same ide, it is advisable to have them on seperate ide's if you are copying on the fly - reduces data collisions and buffer underruns.
However some people do have them on the same ide AND work fine, mine didn't so I changed it then it worked flawlessly.

Hope this helps.

To bring things slightly back on topic :

I would totally recommend buying a seperate DVD-Rom to do ripping with (especially for the sake of £35). On-the-fly burning can be done also then..
Although you might need to play with Master/Slave , Primary/Secondary etc

If Nero is used it'll let you know if the configuration is correct by not giving you a 'Same IDE config error' message

I use an older version of Nero - it didn't give me that error, it just used to hang all the time as though it couldn't read the disc.
However it does work fine now, after the ide/master/slave reconfigure.

I cannot upgrade Nero due to certain guidelines..wink.

I now successfully use recnowmax for all my fly burning.
