I'm wondering as you still need to reflash every time to make a backup.

i close mine and download all my backups. You could leave it open, but then you might over heat easier, as the air airflow is no longer directed across the heatsink fins. I havn't seen any studies on overheating with the case off, but i know if i leave the case off my computer, it gets WAY too hot in there, perhaps the plastic tunnel on the fans to the heatsink might prevent overheating with the case off, but better to be safe than sorry.. Also it exposes the precious motherboard, which can be damaged very easily...

If the case was open, then there would be more open space for the hot air to dissipate or so I would think. I believe that the only reason it would overheat is because that the 360 generates so much heat so quickly and leaves it no place to go. Maybe my theory is wrong but you never know until you try.
For someone that tries let me know how it works out. Personally instead of reflashing my stuff I have a drive in the mail with the correct firmware to put it in my computer and backup games straight through the computer.

yeah... since the air intake is directed across the heatsink even with the case off, i think you would be ok... on a PC the air intake would just blows out into the open air, if the case was off, instead of travelling across the mobo... is the heat loss to surroundings greater than the heat loss due to direct air flow? in the xbox i think you're ok with the case off.

Even if you had your case off you could just get a fan out shoot it across the board. One thing I would suggest though instead of just leaving it open, because of all of the dust I would fabricate a case of my own that is very easy on access and has a large amount of fans. That way it is somewhat protected from dust and will still keep cool.
I would put some fans at the same level of the mobo so that the board would receive some flow and then make the top of the case fans to push the hot air that rise out faster.

The top arrows were supposed to be the top of the case but it didn't come out the way that I wanted it to.

Dust, right, so if you made it an easily accessible case then you could open it and blow it out occasionally.

why don't you guys just remove the hdd, the gray plastic side that holds the hdd and cut a hole just behind the dvd-rom and get a SATA extension cable, that way you just have to remove the hdd to do your backups instead of the whole case. that is exactly what i do and when your not using the dvd-rom with your comp and your hdd back in place, everything is hidden, looks completely stock. and now with 3.0 firmware, you don;t even to flash anymore. i will post pics of mine when i get home from work

I thought about doing something like that but how would you reconect the drive to the 360 without opening the case again? Is it that simple?

you see thats the thing, you plug the sata extension into the back of the drive, and then you feed the dvd rom sata cable from the 360 mobo through the hole you cut then plug it into the extension cable, and when you need to flash or whatever you do just unplug and plug in your pc sata cable, here is the link where i got the idea http://forums.xbox-scene.com/index.php?showtopic=513488(just scroll down and you will see 2 pics, excellent idea and cheap as well. when you order one they are called sata bracket, it is meant to bring your sata inside your computer to an external port on the back of your comp. just unscrew the bracket and your all set. i have for my 360 so i don't have to open my case and i also have one using on my pc so i don't have to take the side case everytime either, hope this helps

I think that the idea is for an original xbox. I thought I had found something else in the past but found that it was for xbox.

nope.. that firmware lets the drive show up on your PC and it acts just like the 360 drive lets ya see all media and ya can rip 360 disk in ISO Buster. check the site for the adapter and look at the firmware it enables the ability to rip 360 games ya dont have to put it in yer xbox1 you flash it leave it in yer pc and rip 360 games with iso buster. I tested it. it works!
