okay i have a decision to make, if i make a DVD ISO image with shrink, and burn it with decrypter, will a movie im backing up play in a stand alone dvd player?,(i figure id ask you all before wasting a blank :)) if so what are the benefits or downfalls of the whole iso deal? do they rip faster, burn quicker? i have many questions about using iso images with shrink and just looking for a more efficent way to burn.
As for playing in stand alone players, yes, but it depends on the stand aloes preferences towards the brand of discs you use.
Rather then use shrink, I suggest using something like Auto GK to rip the DVD into AVIs(XviD or DivX) and then burn the AVIs using Nero vision Express to shrink them to a DVD5. Longer process but the quality will be much better.
As for burning you will see no difference unless you increase the burn speed which may or may not cause problems with your burns.
Ripping an ISO vs ripping DVD files will be the same amount of data and should not rip faster.

I wouldnt consider that totally accurate. Nero visionexpress uses the same encoding engine that Nero recode does. The creator of Nero Recode, made DVD Shrink (for free) B4 going to Nero (for$$$). Same basic program, just runs a little faster.
The least steps to the goal, the least compression/recoding done gives the best quality. Why change the original file types to AVI, just to have another program change it back?
Making an ISO is a very good way to do this, an no need to worry about it playing in a DVDplayer because that is determined by disc type and speed data was burned to disc.
Yeah there's no reason to change video files to AVIs. If you're doing 5GB discs then by all means learn ImgBurn to make an exact copy of the disc. ImgBurn will build and write the ISO image in no time. If it's a DL(9GB) disc it will also do DL copies if your burner can.
For a 9GB movie, then it must be recoded-encoded to fit a 5GB disc. Using program of your choice. With shrink you can also have it create an ISO file that ImgBurn can also burn.
The more tools you learn to use in your arsenal; the more likely there will never be a disc that you can't back up!
Edit @dvdabyss Yes is the answer to your first question. If using +R discs, then if your burner can, booktype to DVD-ROMs.
ISO or VIDEO_TS? It simply is just your preference, neither is faster than the other one. Both contains the whole movie, extras, etc. The choice is yours.
For movies, I prefer VIDEO_TS and have Nero Burning Rom to burn simply because Nero "automatically" change the "book type" into DVD-ROM for me. For PS2 games (ISO image), I prefer DVD Decrypter (ImgBurn) to burn.

thanks for all of the input on this subject, you ALL have been very helpful. ive been doing a lot of experiments with different programs and i am picky when it comes to quality backups. Im a die hard shrinkee and Nero fanatic. i usually dont mess with the avi's, although i love the fact that you can put a movie on a cdr. I guess the ISO is like a zip file, it copies, and burns fast! rather than 10 or 20 files, it just makes 1, now that i like. ill need time to learn new programs and methods, lately its been all work and no play. all of you have been so helpful for the help, keep up the good work!!
right on! that is a killer link, it tells you everything about everything (dvd's!) how do you people know all this stuff? i guess i should spend more time at the pc instead of watching the DVD Abyss Horde i have... great link!!!
Well I personally save the links given by people in the forums.
I made a folder in Bookmarks tab and put them all in there for easy searching. Glad the links help.
