Anyone figured out how to make a DivX standalone player that can connect to a TV and play DivX movies directly without an OS. I know there is infoon the net about this but i aint found it.

Post your methods here if you know of any!

I presume you need:
1). A Case
2). A CD-ROM Drive
3). Connections to Audio L/R and Video
4). DivX Codec installed somewhere
5). HDD for installing codecs and other software to make it all work

Thats all i can think of. Someone posted a similar post somewhere here and i couldnt find it. I bet i find it after posting this one.

Whats wrong with getting a kiss player or just using TV out?

Basically what youre suggesting is merely a dedicated computer for divx with everything automated. I cant say for sure what the minimum specs would be to flawlessly play the divx, but I would suggest buying an older case, motherboard w\cpu, and cdrom drive, and video card w\tv out. Its the automation that I'm not sure how to handle. See if you can find a DOS-based divx player(good luck), then when you make or burn your divx with your regular computer, make the cd bootable, and also make it autorun. I know how to do autorun with windows but not with DOS. I suppose any DOS based media player would work--it wouldnt have to be solely for divx. Perhaps making a batch file that runs your DOS media player and then opens your divx would take care of the autorun issue. Just put the batch file at the end of your autoexec.bat file on the bootable CD.

I've just been there on ModXBox website but couldn't work out WHAT is actually that. If you have a minute, please explain, what is that box about - is it Divx player or console(like Play Station) box? Excuse my ignorant question, but I don't play games at all so don't know this stuff. Thanks for your time!

Oriphus, Kata1

First of all, Straight-out-of-box Kiss DVD-player won't play DivX 3.11 encoded movies. However I've heard that someone has created a hacked firmware, which is capable of playing most of the Divx/Xvid movies out there, including those Divx3.11 encoded ones, but since I have no furthere knowledge about this issue, I'm just gonna write further information about using modded Xbox for Divx/Xvid playback.

What you need is:
- Xbox console (yes the normal game console you can find almost any shop...)
- A mod chip fitted into your Xbox (price range starts from about 30?)
- Necessary software for Xbox

First, after you have bought your Xbox, you have to install a modchip or have it installed by a professional. There are a variety of modchips available, but for example I'm using Xecuter 2 lite modchip, which is more than adequate for Divx-playback -purposes.
After you have your modchip installed, you have to install the software. Basically, you need 2 pieces of software:
1) Some kind of dashboard software (EvolutionX (=EvoX), Avalaunch or similar). The purpose of the dashboard is to get your xbox booted into a one. Think of it as an operating system for your Xbox.
2) Xbox Media Player (=XBMP) for watching movies, play mp3's, listen to shoutcast-radiostations etc. etc.

Yes, I have to admit, that getting an Xbox fitted into a movieplayer takes some time. I used one weekend to solder the modchip, swap the original 8GB harddrive to 120GB one, and setting up the Evox and XBMP. However now I have an excellent "mediaconsole", that can play virtually any kind of video and audio I throw in. And I dare to say, the easiness of use and picture quality exceeds any PC-TV-out combination out there.

Yes, I can still play games with my console, too :)

Please remember, there are some legal issues about modding the Xbox. Some countries (like USA) consider modchips illegal. However, here in Finland they are perfectly legal... And the XBMP-software itself can be considered as illegal software as well. That's why I'm not gonna give any links where to find dashboards or XBMP. But please visit http://www.xbox-scene.com for more information about anything regarding the console itself, or modding.
