just woundering since i have heard that memorex dvdR's r like on of the owrst you can buy just woundering if maxell is any better as a cheap form of media?

Maxell if made in Japan are excellent and should code out as Hitachi High Grade, I've used about 150 of these discs...here is the short list of quality media...

Verbatim (Made in Japan or Made in Taiwan or Made in Singapore)
Maxell (Made in Japan only)
Fuji(Made in Japan only)
Sony (Made in Japan only)
Taiyo Yuden (only made in Japan)

My personal recommendation would be Verbatims, simply because of the wide availability of the discs in most local areas. They are also on sale often. Verbatim seem to be the only ones who have gotten a grip on the DL media thus far as well. The rest of the list might be harder to find locally only because you are reduced to looking at the label to find out the country they are manufactured in. Finally the Taiyo Yudens are the cream of the crop and can only be found online, with the exception of some Sony's and Verbatim being made by TY. Here is a list of some online media vendors:

Keep an eye out for Office Depot Media on sale, the +R 16X disks are Ritek P-16 and perform pretty good, not as good as the genuine TY 8X, but for $19.99 per one hundred, you can't go wrong. They usually scan about 97-98% using DVDInfoPro.

It also depends of which format of maxells. I go with the japanese maxells.Full hub white inkjet printables. Their 8x media is extinct in my realm.

In the plus format of 4x and 8x,ritek makes the majority of the taiwanese maxell.

On the taiwanese dash format of maxells: Majority of the 4x yellowtops,and 8x goldtops are ritek-but there are some cmags out there.

Overall: Maxell plus format has a higher quality vs their dash format-but that is the older 4x and 8x speeds.

Full hub inkjet printable maxell: Definitely the made in japan.Cmags and prodisc are a couple of low quality manufacturers for these discs that are made in taiwan.

16x maxell: I haven't seen any,so I'd try to get the spindles/packs that say made in japan.

16x: Verbatim offers the best deal,locally and on the web.Best buy has them on sale this week.

Office depot has some good quality media. I haven't seen any bad posts of peeps getting cmags or any other low quality mfg.

spOrin- On the maxells - If you get ones that are Made by ritek =Taiwan or maxell ( Japan ) then you are okay ! with the Maxell Japan made being preffered! If the maxells code out as CMags = Crap take'em Back !
