Is there a way to make backups of movies on dvd that will play in a regular player??? If not why the heck did I buy this burner?

Of course there is, thats the whole point of it! You will ahve to rip and compress most moives to do this. Go to this address and read through the details on DVD Recording (section 3):

will my crappy walmart special of a stand alone dvd
player that is connected to my TV play these
compressed movies?

lol - its really down to the media you use. For example answer these questions:

1). What make is your DVD Writer?
2). What format does it record in (+/- R)?
3). What software will you be using?
4). What media do you intend using?

I will answer some of these for you.

To have the best compatibility out of your 'crappy' walmart DVD player, the -R format would tend to be the better. However, that is not to say that the +R DVD format would not be suitable, as it most likely would.

You will have to rip and compress most movies before backing them up. Click on this link --> DVD Shrink and download this program. It will allow you to rip the movie and then compress it. Here is a tutorial for you:

Download, if you dont already have it, Nero v5.5.10.35 to burn your movies to the disc.

Also, you need to choose the right media that suits you. The most compatible discs at a decent price are the Ritek G03's and G04's. use these for best results.
