FFDshow filters with TMPGEnc Plus and Xpress

On my PC TMPGEnc Plus uses FFDShow to open AVI files and the FFDShow icon appears in the system tray while TMPGEnc runs. That's fine.

What I want to know is whether all FFDShow adjustments and filters (like "sharpen" for instance) will work when I'm making an MPEG-2 from an AVI with TMPGEnc Plus (or Xpress)?

If it does, it would seem I have a choice of using TMPG encoding filters or FFDShow filters. Or are FDDshow filters only for playback?

Also, if I can use FFDShow as I ask, does anyone have opinions on the merits of TMPGEnc filters versus FFDShow filters when encoding AVI to MPEG-2?
