Yes, and yes. Just start ratDVD, open your .ratdvd file, and click the RAT-to-DVD symbol. It will output the standard DVD format with a VIDEO_TS folder.
You can then burn that VIDEO_TS folder using any DVD burning software. If using Nero, make sure to use the DVD-Video template at startup.
You can also burn .ratdvd files to disc in the ratDVD format itself for backup purposes. You can fit as many as 3 DVDs onto one regular disc using ratDVD, so it's a good back-up program.
-Do you believe you own your computer and shouldn't be told what you can run and do? Then say *NO* to Microsoft Vista!
-Since half the questions here involve media problems, here ya go: Only use Verbatim or Taiyo-Yuden discs (get your TYs from Rima.com, not Supermediastore or meritline). Forget the rest, no matter what "brand" they sell under. Always burn at 4x speed regardless of the speed rating of this discs or your drive. If you have burn problems with these then you have to update your drive's firmware. For double-layer discs, only use Verbatim DVD+R DL and burn them at 2.4x speed.

AFAIK it's original quality. At least, I can't tell if quality is degraded. Then again, I don't have a very big TV.

See if you can't get a slightly older version of ratDVD than 0.78.1444. The latest version gives lots of errors. I suspect the developer screwed with it before he went to work on FluxDVD.

Easier said than done. It appears that all links for earlier versions of the program point to the latest version (v0.78.1444). I'll keep looking but I think I'm fighting a loosing battle:(

I too encountered similar problems.... i) errors on using ratDVD for the second time (no problem with the first file used). I'm not too sure whether the problem has anything to do with the installation of ratAttack; ii) earlier versions of ratDVD are not available on the ratDVD website but I did find a number of earlier versions on emule (p2p software). I am downloading three and will test each in turn and will install the one that will prove most reliable.
Dunker, which version have you used successfully?

I would not use any program downloaded from a P2P network. Nothing but viruses, and if you're really unlucky, a zero-day one.
I'll look and see if I have an older version. I don't remember the version number I last used successfully except that the latest one is nothing but trouble. I don't see it on oldversion.com so it may take some time.

Thanks for the warning. On further web searching I came across version 0.77.1506 (http://www.9down.com/story.php?sid=5587). Would this be any better than the bugged version 0.78.1444?

... and what's more, a search on this same site yields several older versions (including the notorious latest one) > (http://www.9down.com/search.php?s=ratdvd&x=0&y=0). The question left for us now is which one to install? Over to you Dunker! Regards

Oooh, thanks for the find!
Try ratDVD 0.76.1408 or if that doesn't work, 0.6.1122. I did well with the 0.6 versions - as long as you aren't compressing a DVD-9, you should be fine.

Nothing doing not even with version 0.6.1122.
I also got an additional error message... something about an expired XviD audio decoder (unless the mice (my kids) came out to play whilst the cat (me) was away!) or... the file I am trying to convert is corrupt!

With ratDVD installed, can you view the DVD in, say, Windows Media Player?

Before I started meddling with uninstalling and installing older versions of ratDVD, yes. Then windows failed to run the file. I searched for and intalled a DivX installer (from http://www.divxmovies.com/codec/ [which I believe will work for only the next 15 days]) and the file runs (although the audio keeps on regularly repeating (as in "regularly repeating, regularly repeating, regularly repeating").

Done... I installed default installation. the ratDVD file is reported as a zip file by G-Spot. Windows Media Player plays video but the sound is gone (just a morse-code-like buzzing noise now!). I changed the file from abc.ratdvd to abc.ratdvd.zip and on unzipping got a number of files with IFO, VSI & XV0 extensions. Again the zipping process itself gave an error at one point though the process seems to proceed to completion unlike the case with the ratDVD software. XV0 files run with Nero Show time but only audio - no video. Help!

Basically, it's demuxed audio and video. The XVO file is the audio component, the VSI the VOB equivalent. Now that you've extracted everything, try re-zipping as per the link below. Hopefully, if your original was corrupted, that'll work out some of the bugs. Let me know what happens.

The larger files are the XVO files (one nearly 185MB)... so I think these would be video rather than audio. The VSI files are only a few bytes the largest being a mere 1KB. I shall follow your instructions and will write back.
NB There is another xml file within the AV_TS folder (i.e. StreamData.xml). I trust I should compress with this file where it is.

I have not managed! I tried several permutations to include the 2 xml files with-in or with-out the AV_TS folder. Furthermore, I was zipping with the zipper included with Windows XP (right click > send to > compressed (zipped) folder). Should I be using the WinZIP programme?

I installed WinZIP; set it to zero compression; zipped AV_TS folder containing streamdata.xml together with version.xml (outside the folder). WMPlayer will not run the compressed file (renamed with extension ratDVD); error upon running ratDVD software ("XML document must have a top level element Line: 0"). The situation is a lot worse now really. Before all this, at least the ratDVD file could run on WMPlayer. Not even the original file will run. I am totally lost! I appreciate you are trying to help and would welcome any further suggestions. Regards

I think this form of debugging is way too complex, especially since ratDVD changed versions. BTW, you're right, I did get the audio and video backwards. Now that you have proper Divx/xvid installed, have you tried uninstalling the versions of ratDVD you have and going back to the latest or second-latest version, which ever one worked? The second-latest would be preferable if possible.

Thanks. No I haven't reinstalled ratDVD after all this. I'm still using v0.6.1122. I was following your instructions almost to the letter. I must add that I'm at present using ratDVD again on the original ratDVD file but I unchecked Menu and Extras leaving what should be programme episodes that I want to eventually change to individual AVI files later (done this successfully with Part 1 of the same title; what I've been trying to do all along is the same but for Part 2). I got an error early in the conversion process to VOB ("ratDVD has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.... the information... might be lost...") but I have not closed this window. ratDVD is still running and the VOB files are slowly being created despite this error message. I'm keeping my fingers crossed the conversion will go to completion to allow me to recode with Nero then to convert individual recoded VOB files into AVI files. Incidentally the two files I mentioned are the only ones I have ever come across and hopefully will not need to use ratDVD again. I can only consider this to have been one of those "interesting" exercises... perhaps?
