I'm new here and new to burning backups of my movie DVD's.
I tried compressing movies onto DVD-R's and DVD+R's, both the entire disk and movies only. There was a noticeable degradation in the video quality, so I've decided to stick to DL's.
I've read several of the threads here on different brands. It seems that Verbatim is the consensus top dog. My first burns with DL's were done on Memorex DL's since my local retailer did not have Verbatims and I wasn't willing to wait on shipping time to get started. The Memorex worked OK, and the video quality on playback is fairly high. I've now ordered some Verbatims and will be anxious to see if there is a noticeable difference in the playback video quality.
My question is whether any has had any positive experiences with any of the lesser priced DL's? If not, what are the negatives attached with these brands -- like RiData and Playo.

The lesser quality discs will deteriorate at a faster rate. So will those Memorex. It has to do with the dye used in the manufacturing process.

I only use Verbatim DL's.
However to get good compressed film backups, you should use DVD Rebuilder with Canopus Procoder 2 or Cinema Craft Encoder.
The difference in the results compared to Shrink, Recode and the host of commercial crap applications is in a different league.
Maybe try that before you end up paying out too much on DL's over the years.
I've done plenty of big films from DL to Single layer Taiyo Yuden disks.
King Kong, LOTRx3, Chronicles of Narnia and can't tell the difference even on my 50" Sony Bravia TV.
I always take away the crap from the film though (menus, extras, subs, foreign languages, directors comments) Just keeping the main movie and all English audio formats. I only ever keep menus for episodic series disks.

I'm with BigDK. Strip out the previews and extras I don't want with remake leaving main movie, functional menu, and extras I want to keep then encode with dvd-rb/cce or pc2. Can't tell the difference between the original and the backup on my 52" HDTV. No need to use DL media or split onto 2 discs. I do use DL media on occasion but only when I combine discs and the folder is over 10 gb. Then I compress to fit the DL with dvd-rb/cce or pc2.

At least if you split the films, it gives you a chance to go for a P*ss.
I'd rather hold on and keep the film on one disk.
I was forced to split when I started backing up using DVD Cloner, luckily I found the proper software and could thenchuck all those disks away.
As said, you really need to see for yourselves the quality of the DVD RB produced backups.
You need to remember that CCE and PC2 are professional tools used by broadcasters etc... so the difference in results compared to the cheap software etc... is beyond compare.
If you insist on using DL's or splitting, then carry on, but you have nothing to loose in trying what is considered the ultimate backing up combination of software.
DVD RB is free for the basic version, or about £20 for the Pro version.
CCE and PC2 can be obtained in trial versions to start with.
Other versions are available at very large discounts if you know where to look!

BigDK:
I took your advice and got DVD RB with CCE. However, in reading all the various materials about RB, I must say I'm very confused. Let me tell you my understanding (and a few of my questions) from reading all the stuff about RB.
First, as I understand it, RB does not rip the DVD, so I need to rip the DVD using another program like SmartRipper.
Second, as I understand it, RB does not burn the new DVD, so I need to use a separate burning program to burn the new DVD. (Which burning software would you recommend?).
So, here is my understanding of the steps I need to take to use DVD RB.
First, I rip the DVD with SmartRipper into a file (File 1).
I then use DVD RB with CCE to encode the data into another file (File 2).
I then must convert the material in File 2 into .iso with File2iso and place that into another file (File 3).
I then use a separate burner program and burn the File 3 onto the new DVD. Again, does what burner program I use make a big difference? Can I use the DVD Clone or 1 Click Copy programs I already have to burn the DVD -- just identifying File 3 as the source file?
Another question I have is audio. Obviously, I don't want to convert audio files into .iso. Do I just move them into File 3 as ripped, or do they need to be converted somehow as well?
Or, as I hope, am I making this way more complicated than it needs to be. HELP!!!!!!!!!!!

MavsFan,
Quote: First, as I understand it, RB does not rip the DVD, so I need to rip the DVD using another program like SmartRipper
Yes, you will need to rip the dvd to your hdd, although you can use any ripper utility or combination of to perform the task such as dvd decrypter/anydvd, dvdfab decrypter, or ripit4me.
Quote: Second, as I understand it, RB does not burn the new DVD, so I need to use a separate burning program to burn the new DVD. (Which burning software would you recommend?).
RB will make a video_ts folder which can be burned with many burning apps. I use and recommend Nero. If you upgrade to the pro vs of RB it will make an ISO if you so choose and you can then burn it with imgburn or DVD Decrypter or tell RB to burn it automatically after it is finished.
Before you buy CCE, I recommend using HC encoder by Hanks, which comes bundled in with dvd-rb. You can always install CCE. HC is as good as CCE but is quite a bit slower.

I use DVD Decrypter with AnyDVD in the background.
I rip the film to HDD in file format.
I then run the film through DVd RB with the option to save the file in ISO format.
I then burn the ISO image to disk using Decrypter again.
