Any one have success with this? It just came out. I have an up to date DeFab Express and AnyDVD. The DVDs are new. Both rippers appear to be working until you get a killer GPF. You have to unplug the computer to 'fix the problem'. I am figuring I will just have to wait for a new version of DeFab and cross my fingers that that fixes it.

i backed these up the other day with no problem. 1. you mention fab and AnyDVD. you CANNOT have AnyDVD running in the background while using fab. it will create a conflict. disable/exit AnyDVD prior to starting fab. 2. run through VobBlanker after fab, prior to shrink, just for "insurance". 3. if still have a problem (shouldn't!) try ripit4me.

like i said, i had no problem. hopefully the conflict with AnyDVD was your problem and that is easily solved.

let us know what happens.

That is interesting... DeFab worked for you? I have the auto-update on so I would think I have the latest version. It did check before it started.

I have been around the block more than once so I do what not to do but thanks for the advice anyway. I usually do not even have AnyDVD installed since DeFab usually is a head of AnyDVD. It is when DeFab does not work that I download and install the new update. AnyDVD has never saved the day. The good part is "it knows" I have a licence when I re-install.

From your point of view I must be doing something wrong that is logical. Even my drive is new. I can't figure out why you could rip without problems I could not. I will not dwell on it. Your last suggestion was on the money.

I did burn the midnight oil and picked up a new tool, ripit4me. That allowed me to rip the disk without any GPFs. This morning I was pleased to discover the RIP was complete. As I write, Shrink is finishing up the compression

I thought about this inconsistancy all morning and on my long drive to work it became clear that the industry has changed. A partcular movie/disk would be uniform on the market. That has changed. As I researched last night there were several movie products that some persons had problems while others did not. There was a needless amount of finger pointing. They basicly said "You must be stupid because I had no problem using the same utilities to rip the same movie you did without problems. In those discussions I saw the first mention of ripit4me. It 'sits on top of' an old utility dvddecrypter. That software has not been updated in years. Therefore the ripping routines are obsolete. Ripit4me's claim to fame is correcting errors in the input file which the ripper uses to decrypt the files. I figure if ripit4me works on new releases, the product was using a different protection method than just the newest encryption algorithym.

Thanks Surfgeo for being helpful, not condesending.

hey Mez,

hope your burn produced a perfectly playable disk. cool.

yeah, i hope my suggestions didn't come across as "condescending". sometimes when writing here it gets to be a form of shorthand and can come across as rather curt, even though it is not intended that way. i notice that some people have constructed comprehensive answers that cover all the bases re fab, blanker, shrink, ripit4me, imgburn, etc. and just copy the whole thing in response to each query that is relevant. that's a good idea since it takes less time and one can also add a sentence or two directed at the specifics mentioned by the inquirer.

my initial response was to your mention of having fab and AnyDVD, and knowing that conflicts can arise if AnyDVD is running while using fab, because i've done that. in fact, i've committed probably every error you see people writing about, and a few i haven't seen anyone write about yet!

and sometimes when people report an error when others have had success using the same tools it is possible that they might have a different region dvd, or a bad pressing, or who knows what? i've mentioned elsewhere that i have had the experience of using both fab/blanker and ripit4me and having neither successfully work on a particular disk after multiple attempts and been mystified because others say it works for them, and giving up. then coming back the next day, with no changes or updates of any kind and it works using the same software.

sometimes i wonder...

anyway, glad it's working again for you and that you have added ripit4me to your arsenal of tools.

Yes, I burned 1 & 2 so far. One needed that new fix-it utility before it would encode. Of course once it is on a hard disk there are plenty of utilities you can 'throw at it'.

Surface blemishes are the normal wild card. It does not take much of a scratch in the right place to bugger things.

I had problems with AnyDVD as well. That is why I removed it. I may keep it on my one computer. I try Shrink and if that fails my next attempt is with DeFab Express. AnyDVD should improve the success rate of the first attempt.

I have seen good disks skip in a player. I know it is time to turn off the player and let it cool off for a while. After an hr 'nap' the disk does not skip.

@Xenokai

what are you doing in VobBlanker that is annoying you? unless you want to edit, you just have to click the "process" button and wait 5 minutes.

another option is to use ripit4me in "one click mode"... decrypts, fixes all the structural problems, opens shrink...

I can verify that House did go from minimal copy protection to where you need ripit4me using all the bells and wistles. It has many unreferenced cells ect. I have seen some of the 'other' disks from the same season that had nearly no protection.

Ripit4me worked great for the first disk in conjunction with DVDDecrypter and Shrink (turning AnyDVD off). I haven't tried the other ones yet but I just wanted to plug Afterdawn.com, it has never failed me. Thanks Guys!

rodeh7, I will second that at-a-boy. This forum does appear to have the most informed members of any of this type of forum. I have perused some of the other forums of this same type and shocked at how ignorant their members were.

We all ought to give our selves a pat on the back! The members can give them selves 2 pats and the addicts can take 3.
