-Do you believe you own your computer and shouldn't be told what you can run and do? Then say *NO* to Microsoft Vista!
-Since half the questions here involve media problems, here ya go: Only use Verbatim or Taiyo-Yuden discs (get your TYs from Rima.com, not Supermediastore or meritline). Forget the rest, no matter what "brand" they sell under. Always burn at 4x speed regardless of the speed rating of this discs or your drive. If you have burn problems with these then you have to update your drive's firmware. For double-layer discs, only use Verbatim DVD+R DL and burn them at 2.4x speed.

Er, good luck, especially if you bought an Asus board! :/ Had an Asus board that wouldn't take a DVD/CD burner, except on XP, even though it claimed compatibility with Win2k and other OS'. Garbage products and service.
But I digress. There are still a few more tricks to try. 1. if it's an Asus consider returning it. 2. check your IDE cables and make sure they're in good shape and properly seated. Boot your machine and try again. If that fails, go into CMOS and look at your IDE functions for a conflict or missetting. In particular, you may wish to explcitly enter into the BIOS where your CD/DVD drives are. It should offer a setting such as CD-ROM or ATAPI DEVICE. You can leave your hard disks set to AUTO. Reboot twice and see how your DVD drives work then. If that fails, also check your motherboard manufacturer's site for a BIOS upgrade.
