i just started burning recently. ive used to DVD Shrink to backup a disc and the quality was around 95% of the original which was great. however, i notice when i convert avi's to mpeg using cucusofts converter, and then turning them into VOBS with cucusofts mpeg to dvd burner, the quality isnt as good. i know its getting compressed. my question is can you do with avi's what you do with a regular dvd disc? like could you take an AVI you downloaded, then open it with DVD Shrink somehow to take out the end credits so that it wouldnt be so compressed? basically anything i can do to improve the quality of AVI to VOB burns would be appreciated. thanks for reading
It depends on the quality of the original. I take it you mean that the VOBs being generated don't look as good as the AVI. If that's the case, try ramping up your bitrates. How much will depend on the length of your source material and how much you want to get onto a single DVD. A video bitrate of 9800 is the maximum allowed by the DVD standard, which will give you about 1 hour of video and audio one a regular DVD-5. If Cucusoft allows it, try Variable Bit Rate, using a maximum of, oh, 8000 kbps and a minumum of 2000, and, maybe, a median of 5000 if the option is offered, and 2-pass encoding. You may have to try another software and/or encoder. It may be enough to simply try a different program like AVI2DVD and fiddle with the different encoders supplied, though I'd use VBR and 2-pass with any of them. the NuENC encoder seems the best.
Edit: Just noticed you are going through two steps to get to VOBs. NO GOOD! Try AVI2DVD to convert directly.

-Since half the questions here involve media problems, here ya go: Only use Verbatim or Taiyo-Yuden discs (get your TYs from Rima.com, not Supermediastore or meritline). Forget the rest, no matter what "brand" they sell under. Always burn at 4x speed regardless of the speed rating of this discs or your drive. If you have burn problems with these then you have to update your drive's firmware. For double-layer discs, only use Verbatim DVD+R DL and burn them at 2.4x speed.

Try using a program like Avi2Dvd. It's free and also has support for the best free encoders. Video encoded with QuEnc will probably look a lot nicer then what you get from cucusoft, especially if you're compressing the movie a lot.
