HI, I've been using DVDShrink and DVD Decrypter for a short while and I have successfully made copies of a few DVD's, but I recently tried to copy 'the matrix' and I went through the procedure as normal and everything seemed to be working, it finished burning to my blank dvd (TDK DVD-R 1-16x) but when I tried to play it back, my laptop and DVD players didn't even recognise that there was a disk in there. I went through and double checked my shrink and decrypter settings and tried copying another DVD (spiderman) but the same thing happened.

Does anyone know why this is happening or how I can fix it? BTW I had been using these TDK disks for the previous DVD's that actually worked.

Hi Jason1885
What's the make & model of the burner? May need a firmware update.
You can chekc this in decrypter too. Go to tools>drive>check for firmware update. Before checking it will list the current version you have.

What speed did you burn at? May be another factor.

TDK's ain't the best - better would be Verbatim or made in japan Fuji, Sony or Maxell.

I'm nt exactly sure of the make and model, its in my laptop which is an HP dv4220tx and it says 'lightscribe 8x DVD+-RW and CD-RW combo drive with double layer support' I also had a look in the device manager under 'DVD/CD-ROM drives' and it says 'TSSTcorp CD/DVDW TS-L532M'
I tried the firmware update for DVD Decrypter and it took me to some site but said that there wasn't any available or something
I've tried a few different speeds, 2x, 2.4x, max, but none of these make a difference.

Did u use the same TDKs when u had success?

Also u can put a blank dvd in and open DVD Decrypter amd select Mode/ISO/read, and check the

Pre-recorded Information:
Manufacturer ID: TYG02

if the ID says CMC mag, then i would just try the better media that Binkie posted

read the edit part of my earlier post and if the Manu. Id is CMC
then that is probably the problem.

Also sorry to inform u that CMC made DVDs are the worst.
The best way to burn them is to start a fire and throw them in it! LOL ;)

i also didn't see ur model in the Firmware page, all they had was 'TSSTcorp CD/DVDW TS-L532A'

I put the blank disk in and checked it with decrypter and it says pre recorded information: manufacturer ID: TTH02

I don't understand why it would work with these blank dvd's before but not now.

Couldn't find much on your laptop burner.
There may not be a firmware update for it - mine has never had one in almost a year yet new media has come out.
PC/laptop manufacturers it seems aren't to interested in keeping up firmware support (this helps the drive w/ the read/write strategies of newer media) on the oem burners they use.

You can check here (HP auto update if set would pick up any updates & alert you) to see if any updates.
http://h20239.www2.hp.com/techcenter/HP_...hp_syscheck.htm
You can do the 'check my system' and see if any firmware updates are available.
The other diagnostics they offer here is somewhat usefully.

But as 300bowler said if these are CMC even TTH02 might be part of the problem.
Thinking the max speed is no higher than 8x and if this drive hasn't had a firmware recently may be part of the problem. 16x is somewhat newer media. They may be hit or miss.
Best bet try some of the media mentioned above - these are usually always recommended by the manufacturer.
If you can get 8x speed - get that.
Let's rule out the media 1st.

I'm not sure if this helps but if I put one the attempted burnt dvd's in and read it with decrypter it says 'Device not ready (unable to recover TOC)'

Ok that means unable to recover the table of contents - could be the media.

Let's make sure you are in DMA Mode and not PIO Mode. Here's guide:
http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/260038

Check under 'current transfer mode' & make sure a Ultra DMA mode is listed there.

If all okay there - then need to rule out the media and try some different ones.
Still under warranty on this drive?

OK I checked that and it was all fine (DMA mode etc)
I will buy some new media shortly, can you get those suggested ones in Australia?
Also, would it be worth attempting to burn another copy of one of the dvd's that worked?

I think it is still under warranty

Try burning those TDK's at 4x as i have had those same type of TDKs(The TTH02) and all have worked only burning at 4x speed even though the media is 16x max, but u are better off trying the better media.

Bad news, I bought some Verbatim DVD's and tried to burn again but it still didn't work. So that rules out the media i suppose. What now? Thanks

more bad news... I think. I just attempted to burn one of the DVD's that I had successfully burnt before and it didn't work. I really don't know what could be doing this, i'll give you guys a list of the stuff i've put on my laptop between when the dvd's played and when they didn't, just incase one of these things may be the cause. lets see...
Firefox
winRAR
winZIP
DAEMON tools
Emule
I also downloaded warcraft 3 and now it sits in my 'devices with removable storage' as a CD drive (D:)

The only other thing I can think of is that when I put the first original of the DVD's that didn't work in, this InterActual player thing popped up and asked me to install it to play the DVD??

I know this is probably scraping the bottom of the barrel but i'm really bumbed about this.

Thanks guys

is these the only two programs u r using?

In what order are u using them, Also what program r u using to burn?

Since u used verbs and still get the same problem, then the media is not the problem.

Also when u try to play them in ur dvd player what is the exact
error that comes up?

Also did u click on Binkie's link for the HP update?

Yes these are the only 2 programs I am using, first DVDShrink with the 'iso image and burn with decrypter' setting on, so it automatically opens DVD Decrypter and I insert the blank disk and it burns it. This is exactly what I was doing before when it WAS working.
My DVD player says 'disk error' and automatically ejects it.
If I don't take to newly burnt dvd out of my laptop once it has finished, and I go to my computer, you can see the little disk symbol in the (E:) but if you try and open it nothing happens and u go back to my computer and the symbol has gone and it seems to think nothing is in the drive.
Yeah I did blinkie's link as well.

U can try and Burn the ISO with IMGburn and see if the same thing happens?
heres a link for it
http://www.imgburn.com/

Try that burning program and post back the results.
also the Verbs u picked up are they 16x max speed? if so burn them at 8x speed.

Anothing is how old is ur Laptop?

Also try and read the dvd u burned (with ImgBurn) in DVD Decrypter and see if that TOC message comes up still

I'm leaning more to the drive going. Sounds like it's time to get HP tech support on the phone.
You tried different program, media etc.
A google on this drive didn't have good things to say - a few where HP replaced the drive.
In the link above you can test the drive but think I'd still call tech support esp. if it's still under warranty.

Keep us posted.

Yeah I thought of burning a CD and apart from it ejecting the blank CD and telling me it wasn't blank (which it was because I just put it back in and it changed its mind) it worked fine. I think the laptop is approaching 1 year old.
If I talk to a tech support person, do I tell them exactly what I was trying to do, i.e shrink and decrypt/burn a copy protected DVD? Isn't that illegal or something? What should I tell them exactly?
Thanks guys.

If it's under 1 year old you are more than likely still under warranty. If you took the extended one than you are probably good to go too.

Now for what to tell tech support - well you've burned dvd's - tried different media and programs and the drive doesn't even recognize it after burned.
DVD burning can be used for alot of things like burning data files, creating your own dvd's from many different sources like a camcorder, homemade recordings etc.
You can leave the copy protected bit out - too many other uses for dvd burning & they usually don't get that detailed.

Alright but what are they going to do, will they tell me to do stuff over the phone or will I have to take to laptop somewhere or what? I'm from Australia and i'm not sure if there are any HP centres or anything around here.

Give them a ring and see what they can do. There may be a known issue w/ the drive - but that's just a guess seeing some problems doing a google on this drive. A few mentions of drives being replaced by HP. Simple problems to - unrecognized DVD and TOC errors.
I've had to call HP on my laptop (can't remember the issue now) and just my experience but they had good tech support.
