Need help with linux on PS2

I want to setup linux on my v14 playstation 2. Now I know that there is a playstation 2 linux that works on the pre-v12 systems, but the spch-7000 models are not officially supported by sony cause there is no room for a hdd without hdloader. However, I was thinking there are still a few possibilities for running linux via:
- live cd
- usb hdd
- jump drive
My main problem is not getting the linux but finding a way to load the linux on to playstation 2. For instance, if I use the live cd, I either need swap disc or mod chip to load the burned image. But if I use a usb hdd or jump drive then how would I load the image from the drive and boot it? I was thinking there might be a way to do this the same way people load snes roms on the ps2 but I'm not to sure on how its done and how .elf works exactly. Some input would greatly be appreciated.

edit - can any of this be done with usb extreme? Cause I have an external hdd that I was setting up for usb extreme but if I can run linux with it than it will be better caue then I don't have to go out and buy extra stuff.
