Look like it will became a well know issue :

Alcohol Support Team tested this drive, we find LG GCC-4480B cannot read the disc which is burned by itself's RAWDAO mode, but you can put the disc into another cd/dvd devices, they can read the disc very well.

It is really funny, we will report this bug to LG, let them know this problem.

Someone could go kick their ass ?
(It's a 6 months old drive and still having this bug, come on!)

I assume you own the LG GCC-4480B DVD Combo?
Did you make a backup of Safedisc 2.8-2.9?
CloneCD (supported writers) shows this drive as a "2 sheep" burner (EFM Encoding) basically meaning the drive writes regular bit patterns correctly. Any backup of Safedisc 2.8-2.9 "should" play...?

Theses are none protected CD ROM's.

GCC-4480B just dont play back burned CDR with RAW DAO/SAO mode if it was previously burned on itself..

But plain TAO, DAO, SAO works fine...

I've tried two COMBO drives so far, got same exact problem with both of them.

It seems i'm not alone..

Also, Alcohol Soft Tech Support experienced the same issues.

Did you by chance go back to firmware 1.0 and write RAO DAO and see if the backup would play in the LG? Sounds to me like a a firmware issue m8 simply because the drive has the ability to write RAO DAO.

Well,

1) The first drive i got was with firmware 1.00. (February 2003 stamp on it)

It had alot of problems to recognize cd/cdr/cdrw. (Need to load them in the tray 2-3 times)

So that's why i've tried to upgrade it to 1.02.

2) The second drive was already shipped with firmware 1.02. (March 2003 stamp on it)

And alike you know, RAW DAO/SAO do not work!

Unless LG come with a fix real quickly, i'm going to RMA this drive for another model.

I'm very surprised nobody noticed theses issues
before me.

This drive was released around January 2003.
(~6 Months of operation)

And, I think the GCC-4520B (52X combo) is on his way to get released next month..

I have RMA'd my first drive GCC-4480B with firmware version 1.02. It has the "problem". To my dismay, I got back a 2nd with the same firmware version. I am not sure why LG sent me back a defective firmware version. Are they aware of the problem. I see LG QA responding to the posts here but then why did I get the same version? I am afraid if I RMA this 2nd unit, I will again get a firmware version 1.02. This is gettting ridiculous.

Well,

Firmware 1.00 & 1.02 are bogus, LG now seems to understand the problem! (I have spend around ~2 month to convince them to look at it.)

But they got no fix yet so far.. Even if you RMA that drive, i'm affraid you will get 1.02 firmware again!

(Maybe we will get the firmware fix for christmas..)

Try to e-mail them and ask for firmware updates.
The more people complaning, faster we are going to get the fix out.

I picked up this drive today (9-6-2003) and have the same problem. Firmware is 1.02 and the drive is dated April 2003. I saw an "HP OEM" only firmware listed as 1.03 on the firmware page -

http://forum.rpc1.org/dl_firmware.php?category=3&manufactor=16

- at the very bottom - Has anyone tried this on the standard OEM version?

I also noted that many people on other forums said the drive would fail to read RAW DAO disks that it had burned - I have several RAW DAO disks that I burned with my Plextor 24x burner - It fails to read these as well, so not only disks it burned.

I'll just bad flash my 4480B before the warranty ends next year, then I'll RMA it. Hopefully they'll upgrade me. That'll teach them!!!

Caledon :

Q: Has anyone tried this on the standard OEM version?

A: Yes, it's working, you need to use the
mtkflash program, not the LG flash.

BTW, That OEM HP 1.03 firmware doesn't fix the RAW DAO/SAO problem.

--

Q: It fails to read these as well, so not only disks it burned.

A: Yes, any CDR that were previously burned
with RAW DAO/SAO..

The CDR recognition is the problem over
this GCC-4480B drive.

Here's my latest findings with that drive.

Let's do a last analyst with two GCC-4480B drives examples :

--

1- First drive is stamped FEBRUARY 2003 with firmware revision 1.00

Identified Problems :
=====================

(a) Doesn't support correctly UDMA mode.

(So it does create some instability problems with :
CD/CDR/CDRW recognizing/reading/writing & DVD-ROM reading)

(b) Doesn't support correctly 800 MEG CDR.

Workaround for problem in (a) :
======================

- PIO mode could be used instead of UDMA.
(But PIO cannot be used efficiently when reading DVD > 10x)

Why the DVD reading > 10x wont work efficiently over PIO mode ?

Here's the explanation :
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
[Transfer Rate Default Specs] :
PIO Mode 0: The fastest data transfer rate reaches 3.3Mbyte/sec
PIO Mode 1: The fastest data transfer rate reaches 5.2Mbyte/sec
PIO Mode 2: The fastest data transfer rate reaches 8.3Mbyte/sec
PIO Mode 3: The fastest data transfer rate reaches 11.1Mbyte/sec
PIO Mode 4: The fastest data transfer rate reaches 16.6Mbyte/sec
SINGLEWORD DMA MODE 0 : 2.08 MB/s
SINGLEWORD DMA MODE 1 : 4.16 MB/s
SINGLEWORD DMA MODE 2 : 8.33 MB/s
MULTIWORD DMA MODE 0 : 4.16 MB/s
MULTIWORD DMA MODE 1 : 13.3 MB/s
MULTIWORD DMA MODE 2 : 16.6 MB/s
ULTRA DMA MODE 0 : 16.6 MB/s
ULTRA DMA MODE 1 : 25.0 MB/s
ULTRA DMA MODE 2 (UDMA 33) : 33.3 MB/s
ULTRA DMA MODE 3 (UDMA 44) : 44.4 MB/s
ULTRA DMA MODE 4 (UDMA 66) : 66.6 MB/s
ULTRA DMA MODE 5 (UDMA 100): 100 MB/s
ULTRA DMA MODE 6 (UDMA 133): 133 MB/s
[Nowadays, most of the Pentium based PC supporting
(UDMA 33) or better.]
Typical GCC-4480B Drive Data Transfer Rate:
================================
Maximum CD/CDR/CDRW supported values :
Read CD : 52X (7,800 KB/sec)
(Require PIO Mode 2 or better)
Record CD : 52X (7,800 KB/sec)
(Require PIO Mode 2 or better)
Rewrite CD : 24X (3,600 KB/sec)
(Require PIO Mode 1 or better)
DVD speed Data Transfer rate
=====================
1x 11.08 Mbps (1.32 MB/s)
2x 22.16 Mbps (2.64 MB/s)
4x 44.32 Mbps (5.28 MB/s)
5x 55.40 Mbps (6.60 MB/s)
6x 66.48 Mbps (7.93 MB/s)
8x 88.64 Mbps (10.57 MB/s)
10x 110.80 Mbps (13.21 MB/s) <*>
16x 177.28 Mbps (21.13 MB/s) <*>
Read DVD : 10x
(Require PIO mode 4 or better)
Read DVD : 16X
(Require ULTRA DMA MODE 1 or better)
As you could see, DVD 16x reading require UDMA to be functionning...
(LG claim this drive supporting DVD 16x, so they need to supporting ULTRA DMA MODE 1 or better)
Also, Microsoft recommending to use DMA instead of PIO for DVD video playback :
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?...kb;en-us;317962
Conclusion :
~~~~~~~~

If we dont need to backup or read DVD-ROM faster than 10x.
If we dont need to use 800 MEG CDR (90 min CDR).

We could use that firmware 1.00 version and disable UDMA support in the bios.

Recognizing CD/CDR (even RAW DAO/SAO) is WORKING WELL with this firmware version
ONLY IF UDMA is COMPLETLY DISABLED!!!

IF UDMA isn't DISABLED, you will have to re-insert the same CD/CDR/CDRW 3-4 times into the tray before it get recognized.
================================================================

2- Second drive is stamped MARCH 2003 with firmware revision 1.02

Identified Problems :
===============

(a) CD-Rs and CD-RWs reading speed was reduced to 40x.
(b) Can't recognize back CDR that were made using RAW DAO/SAO with SUB.

Workaround for problem mentionned in (a) :
===============================

Insert the CD, and
HOLD the push button (while the green led is on) until the CDR/CDRW is completly recognized
(This will setup the speed to 48x instead of 40x.)

There's NO workaround for the problem mentionned in (b)
=========================================

Quick facts :
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
#1 If i'm using the exact same computer (with the same software configuration)
with a secondary cdrw drive;
The CDR i previously burned with the GCC-4480B using RAW DAO/SAO
could be recognized CORRECTLY in the secondary cdrw drive.
#2 This problem DON'T occur over any other CDRW drives (except for GCC-4480B drives.)
even if sitting on the same or different people computers.
#3 This problem ONLY occur when upgrading or having firmware 1.02.
If using that same GCC-4480B, and rollback it's firmware to 1.00,
it's working fine with UDMA mode disabled using the exact same computer!!
-> This is what im doing right now...
#4 More than one person is complaining about this problem.
I've tried two different GCC-4480B drives myself.
#5 Within the same LG GCC famility combo drives : GCC-4120B, GCC-4320B
Theses models DONT have this problem.
(i previously owned them both, so that's why i've purchased the GCC-4480B the the first place..)
Conclusion :
~~~~~~~~~~~~

So the only change that presently make CDR recognition to fail over
previously burned RAW DAO/SAO using the GCC-4480B drive is the firmware
version.

1.00 : ALWAYS WORKING with UDMA disabled
1.02 : NEVER WORKING (even with or without UDMA disabled).
