Is it me or am i reading to much into the difference
i myself have bought 25 balkpaq x4 (Orange 1s) which have the Princo dye i have burnt some backups and they burn ok but i get skips in them when playing back on ps2 and dvdrom drive but not in keeps skipping half way through
i have looked through some of the threads and most people seem to like the ritek G04 disks i have looked on some of the dvd-r suppliers and their are different makes of the ritek disks (ie datawrite, bulkpaq and then theres the unbranded 1s)
as from what i can tell its the dye on the disks thats makes the difference
iam wanting to try the ritek disks
but not sure if the makers of disk range in qaltiaty
have i got this all wrong? or what please

I've tried many different types of dye and I swear by the Ritek. I have a very sensitive player at home and its fussy about what it will accept. I've never had any problems with the Riteks (except one dodgy batch where I had about 7 out of 25 fail on me. compared to say the Verbatim ones I tried which failed four out of five and the one that did work froze part way through.

Firstly, there are a few variences in discs that you should be aware of. You, as stated, are aware of the different types of dye that discs have. With your normal DVD Movie and DVD ROM discs, there is no dye as such on the writing surface. These discs are burnt to in the literal sense that we would burn to CD and DVD-R. Instead they arew pressed. However, the average 'joe', being you and i, would not be able to afford, nor if we could, buy a DVD pressing machine. They are set up to press the same image many times.
We get around this by using organic dyes to enable us to write to the disc. The better the dye, the more compatible the disc will be.
- Ritek G0#'s are probably the most compatible discs available. The G03 is an excellent 1x/2x disc with the G04 being an excellent 4x disc.
- Brand is an issue as well. Depending on the brand, the discs, even though are manufactured by Ritek, can be of differing standards. For instance, you can buy Datasafe O1ne discs with a Ritek G03/4 dye. These discs are not as good quality as the Datawrite G03/4's and are better quality than the Unbranded Go4's.
Princo aren't a bad make either. However, Princo do not do as much quality control as ritek, and so ritek are the better make to go for.
TO sum up: Datawrite with Ritek or Traxdata with Ritek are the best. Verbatim are pretty good too!

To be honest I've not seen a great deal of difference between brands. Ritek is the factory where they are made. They do make their own discs but they also make discs for other companies. Kinda like toothpaste, often you can have several brands which are made at the same factory. I've always tried to use datasafe/datawrite or I've found the Traxdata ones to be very good. It depends on what speed your looking for.

I bought the 25 pack of "Red" 4x Datawrite (Princo) discs for £20 from www.blankdiscshop.co.uk They seem to work a treat in my Pioneer 105. I've burnt a couple of backups and about 10 DVD films. The films also play fine in my standalone (Pioneer) player but not in my old LG (3350) Player. In fact I haven't found any discs that work in this player?
Out of Interest which particular test in ADVDinfo gives the info asked for by da boss in his post at the top of this forum?

Compatibility may be more of an issue with the burning software you use. I use suppossedly cheap princo disks, have a pioneer 104 and 105 now and the 1x disks burn fine at 2x, and the 4x disks work well too. I pretty much stick to the 1x disks because they're cheap. I finally had one coaster since last year, but all the other disks play fine using Record Now Max to burn. I haven't seen any signs of media deterioration yet either, but then I'm very careful not to abuse (bend) or scratch my disks.
Software that doesn't work, or decides on it's own to run all the time, sucks.

Guys when using Record Now Max 4.50, what way do you burn a movie to DVD? When using the wizard do i choose option 1, 2 or 3? (exact copy, music or data).
Or do i close the wizard and select:
copy or image or data or audio or video CD or mixed mode or open. I tried burning off a copy and it took bout 40mins and didnt work. I've been using Nero 5.5.10.35 and although i get media errors or something, it works in the players fine.
Any help would be appreciated!

This is off-topic, but what the hell.
For RecordNow Max, Data is *supposed* to work quite well. Make sure VIDEO_TS is upper case, make sure you have an AUDIO_TS folder. Click options, click DAO Closed for DVD. I have tried it and it has worked. Nero is the devil. It doesnt work in many players so don't take a chance.
To be safer, use an older copy of IMGTOOLS (0.79) to make an ISO from the VIDEO_TS folder. Don't use newer versions, they switched to the Nero engine. This will author the disc perfectly, and auto-creates the AUDIO_TS folder for you. You can then burn this ISO file with recordnow max, Nero or even Alcohol.
I have heard and found in my experience this is the most error-free and compatible way to do it.

I'm not so sure about that.
Firstly, I was unaware that the "One" discs were Ritek; certainly the 4x media is made by Lead-Data, a company between Princo and Ritek in terms of quality.
Secondly you can't tar all unbranded G04s with the same brush. Some are *far* better quality than any Datasafa/E-Net product. Some are worse. Datasafe/E-Net are very guilty of mixing bad media in with good, and as a result I would never trust them unless they were very cheap.
In my experience most unbranded Ritek G04s are better than Datawrite. In general I find unbranded media to be more reliable -- the printing systems most of these budget cheapo brands like Datasafe use often unbalance the media making burns of lower quality.
