After a long time of trying to find out which dvd recordable brand is best, I cam across many conflicting views. So I decided to do my own experiemnt.

DVD BRANDS USED:
TDK DVD-R, 8 and 16 speed.
IMATION DVD-R, printable 8 speed.
SONY DVD-R, 8 speed.
TEVION DVD-R, 8 speed.

TEST 1: SUN AND HEAT: In this test the disks were put for 2 hours per
day from 1200-1400 in full sun light ouside in 28-32 celcius
temp. This was done for 3 days. At the end of this test all
disks were still playable, the contents was still intact.
No problems. CONCLUSION: ALL DISKS SHOWED SAME RESISTANCE
TO SUN AND HEAT DAMAGE. NO DIFFERENCE BETWEEN BRANDS.

TEST 2: DELAMINATION TEST: In this test 2 of each brand of dvd disks
were physically bent with hands, like taking a disk out of
its case in a rough manner. This was done for a total of 20
times per disk. CONCLUSION: BOTH SONY DVD-R DISKS SHOWED
SIGNS OF DELAMINATION, SONY FAILED THIS EXPERIMENT. ONE
DISK OF THE TDK DVD-R 16 SPEED SHOWED DELAMINATION. ALL
OTHER DISKS NO DELAMINATION.

TEST 3: PHYSICAL TEST: Im this test 1 of each brand of disk was
physically split into the 2 layers of plastic that the disks
are made of. A pin was forefully pushed in between both
layers of the dvd along side the inner plastic ring.
This was to see which disks were beter glued together.
CONCLUSION: TDk 8 SPEED WERE THE HARDEST DISKS TO SPLIT
FOLOWED BY TEVION,SONY, IMATION, AND FINALLY TDK 16 SPEED.

TEST 4: SCRATCH TEST: In this test 2 of each brand of disks were
scratched. This was done by passing the recorded disk surface
over a rug which put on the disk minor scratches. This was t
imitate wear and bad handling of a disk. CONCLUSION: ALL
DISKS WERE PLAYABLE, THERE WAS NO SKIPPING, OR THE IMAGE
FREEZING ON THE TV. ALTHOUGH THE SCRATCHED DISKS DID NOT
WORK IN SOME DVD PLAYERS. NO DIFFERENCE BETWEEN BRANDS
DEPENDS MORE ON DVD PLAYER.

DISK QUALITY: When it came to judging which disks were built beter,
they were compared to actual real pressed DVDs. TDK 8 speed
was built the best, they had a smooth outer edge. This was
followed by TEVION,SONY, IMATION, AND TDK 16 SPEED.

OVERALL CONCLUSION: 1--- TDK 8 SPEED were the best.
2-- TEVION second best
3-- IMATION
4-- TDK 16 SPEED
5-- SONY
OTHER NOTE: Overall quality of TDK has droped when comparing the old
8 speed to the new 16 speed disks. So TDK quality
may be droping.

some of the disks you mention use widely varying quality disc manufacturers so you should consider that when trying to compare quality of 'brands'.

Main PC ~ Intel C2Q Q6600 (G0 Stepping)/Gigabyte GA-EP45-DS3/2GB Crucial Ballistix PC2-8500/Zalman CNPS9700/Antec 900/Corsair HX 620W
Network ~ DD-WRT ~ 2node WDS-WPA2/AES ~ Buffalo WHR-G54S. 3node WPA2/AES ~ WRT54GS v6 (inc. WEP BSSID), WRT54G v2, WRT54G2 v1. *** Forum Rules ***

'Best quality' for me is the most stable dye which retains it data over many years.

I've got a lot of various brands of discs, quality tested over a 3 year period, that sorta gives you a good insight into stable dye.

While sturdy construction of blanks is commendable, its no use having a well made disc with dye that becomes unreadable a year or so later.

sorry; dude; those manufacturers aren't that great;) the only one I would even consider are sony's and those are only average quality; 2 are CMC Mag's (which are the worst ever); and I've heard nothing good of TDK; and I've never even heard of 'Daxon'....

here's the ONLY discs I use:
1. Sony MIJ 8x
2.Verbatim

Seems like a pointless exercise bearing in mind all the discs tested are known to be crap playability wise which is what its all about.Dye is the most important part of a disc, and only ty at that as per ashj.

Ashj so what brand of DVD media do you use?
Media I use/found to have very stable dye are;

Verbatim esp Verbatim (TYG02), MC004 looks promising

Taiyo Yuden esp x8 (personal results at X16 not as good, though still good)

Maxell including Ritek G05 and R03 not just MIJ.

Have many x4 Imation, Ritek G04, infiniti and other makes of discs which still scan well 2 year+ later and about an equal number that don't.

Did use a NEC ND1300A a while back, then a Sony (Liteon), now I

use Benq drives
1640, 1650, and lightscribe 1655.

Average is about 97 quality score, as I mentioned Verbatim and TY little or no loss (year+), Maxell are usually stable though some do show more signs of degradation than Verbs or TY.

Batch scanning my back ups helped me catch blunders like Ritek G05 printables and a number of other disc's which lost their Dye quality quicker than a cheap T shirt.
