Can I use a regular CD-R writer to write PS2 DVD backups?y/n?

I'd like to know if I could use a regular hp cd-writer to write to a DVD. Is there any way of getting around this? I want to copy a PS2 DVD as a back up but it says it won't fit on a regular CD-R and I don't have a DVD writer. Please help. Thanks!!!
