I've been researching all of this for a while, but I can't decide which would be better.

I don't care about any of the other things that softmodding allows, all I care about is being able to play backup games, and maybe putting a game on the hdd. I don't play online either.

I want something permanent. Could someone help me out with pros and cons (based on experience) for Softmodding and installing a Modchip?

As far as back-ups are concerned, they're on level ground. If all you want to do is play back-ups, then you should be deciding on what type of installation do you want to perform.

Soft mods
Pros
-Free if you have a way of getting the exploit save on your hard drive and have access to one of the three games.
-Quick installation
-No need to open the Xbox.
Cons
-A failed soft mod can cause quite a head ache.
-Hard drive replacement requires extra steps.

Mod chips
Pros
-Hard drive files don't require any changes to play back-ups
-Hard drive replacement is a snap, as it can use unlocked hard drives
Cons
-You have to open the Xbox case to install it. However, this may not be a con if you're more comfortable installing a chip than running the risk of dashboard issues with a softmod.
-Cost, depending on the chip.

It's more a matter of preference than anything. If you have the means to perform a soft mod without having to purchase additional hardware or software (the compatible games or an Action Replay), then I suggest using a soft mod. However, if you don't have those readily available, I suggest using a mod chip. It's going to cost just as much, if not less than it would to buy an AR and a game for a softmod.

Personally, I prefer using a mod chip since all hard drive problems are easily remedied using autoinstallers or replacement hard drives. I've used both, and chipped boxes are far easier to repair dashboard problems on than soft modded ones.

Thanks goes out to theridges for the userbars :)

great points venom!

also, its nice to have blue HDD leds like on a pc, and LAN leds to let you know when files are transferrings (aka xecuter 2.6)

venom, great post, :-)
Im with you all the way too, I prefer modchips
more sturdy. Ive modded over 300 xbox's, never had a come back from modchips, get calls all the time from softmods that Ive done where the user has messed something up.

Plus, I like to have multicoloured xbox logos on bios boot with my name under the XBOX logo:-)

XB360 hitachi xtreme f/ware, chameleon case, whisper & airflow blue led. XBOX w/ 2.6 2x custom "djboogie" bios. PSP 1.50 w/ devhook .52 % 303 f/ware.

lol; I love the points above; but how many threads do we need for this? Does no one just use the search function?

I'm personally a soft fan; but that's because I enjoy the challenge and all; I'm a huge tech geek with way too much time on my hands, what can I say?

Although, for many users, chipping can definitely be the best option, soft is not for everybody, I would say less than 50% of modders should/would prefer soft.
