Hi folks,

Newbie alert - only got my DVD-R yesterday :)

I used to backup movies to VCD using a combo of SmartRipper DVD2AVI and TMPGEnc but hopefully those days are now over.

I've read the articles, searched the forum etc and havent found a reply to the question I am posing so here it is : Is it possible to SmartRip the movie from a DVD and as long as the files come to no more than 4.3gb can I just drag them over to Nero and burn them as a DVD video disc.

The only problem I can see is that the ripped IFO files (Im guessing here, remember newbie) will have redundant information so will need changing, with IFOEdit for example (see I have read the articles and searched lol).

Sorry for the complete newbie post but I just wanted to see if my "old" software kit was still of some use (SmartRipper) and using my old writing software (Nero) if I could get things running.

Many thanks for your help.

Rikki

Usually the size of a DVD should be around 4.438GB. It can vary though. Firstly, since you are new at these, might i suggest using DVD Shrink to both rip and compress your movies. you can use your existing burnning software with this. Here is a crude guide i did on DVD Shrink. A proper guide will be posted on afterdawn in the next few days. Look out for it.

There are a lot to choose from now which is nice, DVD2ONE, DVD Shrink, DVD95COPY, DVDXCopy and the list is growing and growing. DVD2ONE seems the easiest for a newbie IMHO! As for backing up a dvd that is less than 4.3gbs, use DVD Decrypter!!

Many thanks to all!

I downloaded DVD Shrink and used the very helpful guide posted above and backed up a small movie DVD in no time at all!

Then tried one that wasa bit larger and made a mess of it by selecting the directors commentary instead of the main soundtrack LOL.

Practise makes perfect so they say :)
