With this amplifier, which has HDMI, i was wondering (as i don't know a lot about this subject) about what it could do. I assume that you connect your standard dvd player via coaxial, and the surround sound speakers link up to the amp (which has built in 5.1, DTS and pro logic decoder). This gives you surround sound. Then, and this is the bit i am not sure about, you connect the amp to the tv via HDMI which upscales the dvd player and the dvds it plays to HD.

@Niflheim:....yes, you connect the HDMI to the TV; whether or not the amp converts to 1080i (it really isn't so much hi def but it is a better pic if it upconverts to 1080i) really depends on the receiver. Some will upconvert to 1080i while some merely "upconvert" without really defining what that means. A lot of dvd players also upconvert through HDMI now too though. Depends what you're using.

You might want to take a look to see if your dvd player has 5.1 surround on the analog RCA plugs. If so, they're worth connecting and listenting to on the right movies. They are six seperate and distinct tracks put into a DVD but depending on the movie budget it can be inconsequential or awesome....just depends but worth connecting if your dvd player has it.

Also, connecting your dvd directly to your receiver might mean that you MUST run your receiver everytime you want to watch a dvd ... depends if the receiver has a pass through (most don't). I have my dvd and cable connected in such a way that I only have to use the receiver when I want to rather than have to run it all the time.
