Hi kcdc30
If they were made in Japan then you got lucky :)

Using Taiyo Yuden or Verbatim and my drives firmware up to date it's actually very rare where I don't have all 100 in the spindle all burn great - no coasters at all.

You can id those Maxell's using this program to see who they were made by:

obviously i haven't had time to watch all of them yet and some of them are dvd mp3's, referring to the maxells. i've been having problems with the verbatim 8x discs that i have always used. i'll watch a movie and 10 minutes before the end it freezes and cannot be read. happened on a few that i have watched lately. problem is that i can't remember when they were burned or by which program (roxio or Nero) or on which computer. i burn far more movies than i can actually realistically watch. thinking about switching to another media. not to mention that office depot no longer sells verbatim.

What's the MID code for those gold tops?

MXL-RG03
Ritek-G05
CMC-Mag

The MXL-RG03 would be the hitachi made gold tops.Very good discs. Mixed results with the Ritek-G05 gold tops. CMC-Mag goldtops would be the worst, quality wise.

3 different manufacturers for the same identical Maxell Gold Tops.

Issues on the last 10 mins of backups?

Lots of things can cause this, and finding out which drive/s that show those issues will help narrow it down.

Is that during playback on a stand alone player or on your pc?

Usually it's the issue with stand alone players. Make sure the DVD-RW drive that burned them, plays them.It should look near original in quality while viewing on your pc.Watch the last 10 mins on your pc to verify if that drive shows the same issue.

Test those backup discs that has that issue in other stand alone players. Keep an eye on the playback for the last 10 mins or so and note which drive/s show that issue.

You may be burning too close to the edge. Reduce that backup target to 4300-4360 mbs. Smaller target,a little more compression, but it won't burn the outer edge of disc.

they are the GO5's. usually how i test them is to put them in Nero and see if it scans the disc all the way to the end. takes one minute and will freeze towards the end if it is unplayable or unburnable. i haven't kept very good track of the drives they were burnt in. i have two computers, both with dvd burners and both with Nero and roxio installed on them, although i stopped using roxio for movies all together because it was burning them with the video and audio out of sync, whereas Nero would burn the same file in sync. kind of a wierd software issue. roxio is only good now for the mp3 on dvd discs that i make. 99 percent of the movies are not burned to the edge with exception to lord of the rings which i could not shrink any more than i did without using dl's or 2 discs.

What's your compressing program? Nero recode2 or DVD Shrink?

Both have settings to reduce the backup target.Lowering that target does give slight more compression, but keeps the burn from reaching the outer edge of disc. The max a blank dvd will hold is an actual 4380 mbs. I keep mine at 4370. I'd go lower if I had playback issues at the end of my backups.

I had no trouble using DVD Shrink with DVD-5 blanks for the lord of the rings trilogy. 3 hr+ movies-main movie only-1 disc per movie-at a backup target of 4360 mbs.

i use Nero recode and DVD Shrink, depending on how much i need to shrink the file. if it is a really long movie like saving private ryan and lotr i don't trust Nero as much so i use shrink. i never burn at 4700 mb i usually shrink to 4500 or less regardless but on lotr the directors cut i think it was 4500+. some of these movies are less than 2600 mb and still fail at around 95 percent finished, on verbatim media, burned at 4x. could it be possible that my dvd burning drive needs cleaned?
